Newport 71, Clark 65 Christopher Newport will play William Paterson at 7:30 Saturday with a trip to the Final Four on the line. William Paterson ended McMurry's 23-game winning streak with a 77-59 victory. The Captains trailed much of the game, including a 32-27 deficit at halftime, but took a brief 45-44 lead with 11:44 to play on a jumper by Jermaine Woods. But the Johnnies answered by pulling out to a 57-47 lead with 6:10 to go powered by four points each from Kevin Bluth and Luke Witt and three from Mike Nester. At that point Christopher Newport's perimeter game came alive. Antoine Sinclair hit a three-pointer, followed by two threes from Terry Gray and another by Jermaine Woods and the Captains had grabbed the lead, 59-57, with 3:42 to play. St. John's tied it
on a pair of free throws by Witt 12 seconds later, but CNU got a pair
of baskets by Sincalir and one by Carlos Heard sandwiched around a free
throw by Nester and the Captains had a 65-60 lead with 55 second remaining. Sinclair led CNU with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Heard added 18 points and Woods had 12. For St. John's, which finishes its season at 22-6, Nester had 23 points, Witt had 12 and Dusha 10. Christopher Newport is now 25-3 and has won 34 in a row at home, including 19 at the Freeman Center. |
