82, Ohio Northern 77 Maloney finished the game shooting a perfect 14-of-14 from the line,
breaking the NCAA Division III championship record set back in 1975
(Robert Newman, LeMoyne-Owen,12-of-12). He also shot 50% (6-of-12) from
the field, handed out seven assists, and pulled down four boards. Matt
Hilleary recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12
rebounds while Will Morley chipped in with 14 points
for the Cardinals. Freshman standout Chad Bostelman led Ohio
Northern (27-3) with a career -high 24 points, while pulling down seven
boards. The Polar Bears will face the loser of the William
Paterson/Illinois Wesleyan game tomorrow afternoon in the 2:30 pm
consolation game. Ohio Northern had double-digit leads in both halves, including a 66-55
advantage at the 8:14 mark. The Cardinals scored five unanswered to trim
the lead to six, and went ahead for good on Morley’s jumper at the 1:33
mark. Ahead 77-76, Catholic connected on 5-of-6 free throws over the final
46 seconds and held Ohio Northern without a field goal for the final 82-77
score. Catholic shot 42.9% for the game and was 33-for-39 from the charity
stripe (84.6%). Its 33 free throws tied a single-game NCAA Division III
Championship series record. Ohio Northern finished the game shooting 39.7%
and was just 16-for-25 (64.0%) from the line. |
