OSWEGO, NY – Hartwick had a tough night shooting the basketball in a 60-50 loss to the host Oswego State Lakers in the final game of the Max Ziel Tournament. The Hawks, who managed 12 three-pointers in yesterday's win over Farmingdale State, connected on only five of their 33 attempts from beyond the arc Sunday. The loss drops the Hawks' record to 1-1 heading into Wednesday night's game at Division I Binghamton.
Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) had a double-double with game- and career-highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds to pace the Hawks.
The Lakers got off to a good start as they took a 9-2 lead after three and a half minutes. Their advantage grew to 10 points, 16-6, at the 12:16 mark on a Dustin Pond three-pointer.
Later, an 8-0 surge made the Hartwick deficit 16 points, 25-9, with under seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Hawks would rally, however, with a 14-2 run to close the gap to four, 27-23, at the half. Five different Hawks would contribute points in the spurt, led by Justin Pratt's (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) six points on two straight three-pointers in the final 1:23.
The Hawks scored six of the second half's first eight points to draw even at 29-29 two and a half minutes in. The Lakers maintained a slim lead for the next seven minutes of the game but an 11-0 Oswego run in three and a half minutes would hand the hosts a 50-36 lead with six and a half minutes to play. The Lakers shot 4-of-7 from the field in the span while the Hawks were 0-for-3 with three turnovers.
The Hawks cut the Laker advantage to eight points on a three-point play from Wilson with 4:42 left, but five straight points by Oswego over the next three minutes made it a double-digit game which they maintained until the final horn.
Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) contributed nine points and five rebounds in the game for Hartwick. Pratt finished with six points and seven boards. Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) scored seven points and freshman Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) added five points and four rebounds.
Oswego had three players in double figures led by Brian Sortino's 14 points. Rashawn Powell scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds and Pond finished with 11 and seven.
The Hawks and the Division I Bearcats tip-off at BU's Events Center Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
