Tournament MVP Jimmy Evans scored 20 points and all-tournament team selection Lawrence Maroney added 18 Saturday as Nazareth handed the University of Rochester its first defeat of the season in men's basketball, 70-59, in the championship game of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament at Roberts Wesleyan. The victory, the 10th in a row for the Golden Flyers (11-2 overall), lifted the team to its first JPMorgan Chase championship since 1987.
Nazareth had a two-point lead at halftime, 41-39, on the strength of good shooting as the Golden Flyers made 16 of 29 shots and Maroney scored 13 of his points. The Golden Flyers didn't shoot as well in the second half (10-for-25), but they limited the Yellowjackets (13-1) to just six field goals (on 32 attempts) as the lead grew to as large as 12 points, 59-47, with nine minutes to play.
Rochester closed to within four points, 63-59, on a free throw by Gabe Perez with 2:12 left, but Nazareth preserved the upset with a basket by Ryan Shipley (11 points, 10 rebounds), two free throws by Evans and a free throw and a game-ending dunk by Maroney.
In addition to Evans, Maroney, and Shipley, Nazareth's Jake Steck scored nine points and David Gary added eight. Senior guard Jeff Joss led Rochster with 21 points (on seven 3-pointers). Tim Sweeney added 11.
