CENTER VALLEY, Pa.
No. 5 DeSales fell to No. 12 Scranton, 67-58, snapping its school-record 16-game winning streak, on Wednesday evening in MAC Freedom Conference action in Billera Hall.
The Bulldogs (14-1, 4-1) fell behind early as the Lady Royals (14-1, 4-1) jumped out to a 15-2 lead after the first four minutes of the game on 7-for-8 shooting from the field. DSU started the game 1-for-9 from the field. DSU than began to chip away at the lead cutting it to seven points numerous times before Scranton once again pulled away for 34-21 lead with 4:29 left in the half.
Sophomore Alyssa Antolick led a 10-2 to end the half with seven points as DSU entered the locker room trailing by just five, 36-31. Scranton shot 46.7% from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while DSU connected on just 33.3%.
The second half was much of the same as DeSales would make a run and Scranton would answer by hitting clutch shots and fight off the Bulldog runs. DSU got within four points six different times but were never able to take control of the game.
Antolick nailed a 3-pointer and was fouled to cut the lead to 41-39 two minutes into the second half and DeSales also cut the lead to four points twice and were within six with 1:49 left to play, but were forced to foul and Scranton knocked down 4-of-7 charity tosses in the end to record the road win.
Antolick netted a game- and team-high 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting, sophomore Jen Netwall totaled 15 points and had three assists, and junior Amy Yencho recorded 11 points and also dished out three assists to lead the Bulldog attack. Senior Teri Antolick spent much of the game in foul trouble and finished the game with seven points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Holly Liebl grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Sophomore Tara Gemmel led the Lady Royals with a game and team-high 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Gemmel also added four assists and three steals. Junior Kate Pierangeli netted 16 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the 3-point arc, while senior AnneMarie Russo tallied a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
