SCRANTON, Pa.
Junior guard Kate Pierangeli tied her career-high with 24 points to lead No. 7 Scranton to a 61-55 victory over No. 8 King's in MAC Freedom action Saturday afternoon at the Long Center.
Senior forward AnneMarie Russo added 13 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Royals snapped a four-game series losing streak to the Lady Monarchs and improved to 19-2 overall and 8-2 in the MAC Freedom. Senior forward Jen Wozniak led the Lady Monarchs (17-3, 8-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds and senior guard Nikki Kingston added 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Pierangeli scored 14 points in the first half as the Lady Royals converted only eight of 32 field goal attempts (25%) to salvage a 26-26 tie at intermission. Wozniak led King's with 12 first-half points as the Lady Monarchs used their size advantage to outrebound the Lady Royals 24-18.
Pierangeli scored five points and junior guard Katie Dougherty and Russo added four apiece as Scranton went on a 15-6 run in the opening seven minutes of the second half to take a 41-32 lead, its largest of the game. Lady Monarch senior forward Carissa Ryan then scored all nine of her points during a 20-12 run over an 11-minute span as King's cut the lead to one, 53-52, with 2:00 left.
Sophomore forward Tara Gemmel, who finished with nine points, six assists and four steals, hit a layup with 1:45 remaining and Pierangeli knocked down two free throws with 1:13 left to give Scranton a 57-52 lead.
Wozniak scored on a layup with 55 seconds remaining to cut the lead to three, 55-52, before Pierangeli hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Scranton shot 40% from the field (10 of 25) in the second half to finish 31.6% (18 of 57) for the game. The Lady Monarchs outrebounded the Lady Royals, 47-35, but shot only 32.7% (18 of 55) from the field and were guilty of 20 turnovers.
Scranton's win was its first over the Lady Monarchs since a 59-45 victory at the Long Center on February 21, 2001.
