STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Amanda Nechuta scored on a driving layup with 0.9 seconds left to cap an improbable UW-Stevens Point rally in a 70-69 win against UW-Platteville Saturday at Berg Gym in Stevens Point.

The 20th-ranked Pointers outscored the Pioneers 16-2 over the final four minutes of the game to pull out the victory.

The Pointers led for most of the first half and held an 11-point lead with 13:17 left before UW-Platteville took control of the game with a 28-4 run to take a 67-54 lead with just over four minutes left in the game.

However, Andrea Kraemer started the UW-Stevens Point rally with a 3-pointer with 4:03 left to cut the lead to 10 points. Tara Schmitt had two driving layups and Kraemer scored on a fast break following a steal to cut the lead to 67-63.

Nechuta scored and was fouled with 1:06 left to cut the lead to 67-65, but missed the ensuing free throw. Cassandra Heuer rebounded the miss for the Pointers and was fouled with 59 seconds left. She made both free throws to tie the game before the Pioneers turned the ball over on the inbounds play. Kraemer was fouled with 52 seconds left and made one of two free throws for a 68-67 lead.

UW-Platteville got the ball inside to Katie Fries, who scored on a short jumper to give the Pioneers a 69-68 lead with 34 seconds left.

UW-Stevens Point then worked the ball inside to Nechuta, who missed a short shot with six seconds left and the rebound bounced off a UW-Platteville player giving the ball back to the Pointers. UW-Stevens Point inbounded the ball to Heuer, who drove into the lane and dished to a slashing Nechuta, who scored her game-high 19th point to give the Pointers the lead.

UW-Platteville threw a long inbounds pass on the final possession, but Nechuta broke up the final chance to give the Pointers the win as they improved to 17-4 overall.

Kraemer added 19 points for the Pointers, who had 28 turnovers. Angie Sisson had 13 points to lead UW-Platteville, which had 27 turnovers for the game.
