SCRANTON, Pa.
No. 12 DeSales erased a 16-point second-half deficit and defeated No. 10 Scranton 73-71 in overtime to win its 10th consecutive road game in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Alyssa Antolick hit the game-winning jumper from about five feet with six seconds left in overtime to help capture the win. The Bulldogs (21-2, 10-2 Freedom) had trailed 71-67 with 1:51 left in overtime but outscored the Lady Royals (20-3, 9-3 Freedom), 6-0, over the last 1:51. Senior Teri Antolick converted a layup with 1:38 remaining and knocked down two free throws with 1:04 left setting up her sister's last second heroics.
The second-half comeback started when DSU trailed, 50-34, with 13:01 left. A 3-pointer by Alyssa Antolick, a jumper by junior Liz Kelly, and another trey by sophomore Jen Netwall cut the lead to eight, 50-42, with 11:19 remaining.
Scranton answered with a 7-2 run pushing the lead back to 13 at 57-44 on five points from junior Kate Pierangeli. The Bulldogs then went on an 8-0 run to get within five points at 57-52 with six minutes to play. Teri Antolick keyed the run with four of the eight tallies.
Scranton pushed the lead back up to seven points on a lay-in by senior AnneMarie Russo before DSU again responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a jumper from Alyssa Antolick with 2:31 left to play tying the game at 61. Two free throws from Pierangeli and a jumper by senior Amy O'Rourke gave UofS a four-point edge, but DeSales responded once again as Alyssa Anotlick hit a jumper at the one-minute mark and calmly swished in two free throws to extend the game into overtime tied at 65.
DSU had led for the first 12 minutes of the game before they were outscored 13-6 over the final eight minutes of the opening half and trailed by five, 32-27, entering the locker room. Scranton started the second half with an 18-7 run to take its largest lead, 50-34, with 13 minutes left in the game.
Teri Antolick recorded her second straight double-double with a season-high 27 points and 15 rebounds. Alyssa Antolick also reached double digits with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and six blocks. Junior Amy Yencho totaled nine markers and senior Clare Sauser came off the bench to grab seven rebounds and swipe three steals.
Pierangeli led the Lady Royals with 18 points, six assists, and five steals. Junior Kate Dougherty and Russo each tallied 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
