ST. JOSEPH, Minn.
Karen Fricke scored a season-high 17 points and Cara Jones added 15 points, but No. 6 St. Benedict rallied past No. 5 Carleton 77-65.
The loss ended Carleton's (23-1, 20-1 MIAC) school-record 23-game winning streak. The Knights can still clinch the MIAC title outright and secure the top seed in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs by beating Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday. The Blazers (23-2, 19-2 MIAC) need the Knights to beat the Gusties to avoid being the third seed in the postseason tournament, although a Gustie win would give the Blazers a share of the MIAC title.
Michelle Barlau led all scorers with 33 points.
Megan Vig added 12 points for the Knights.
The Blazers broke to a quick 23-14 lead, but the Knights rallied with 3-pointers by Fricke and Jones to take a 33-32 lead at the half. A triple by Jones 5:30 into the second half gave the Knights their largest lead, 42-35. The Blazers then embarked on a decisive 20-4 spurt, capped by a Leah Laurich three, to lead 55-46.
Carleton rallied, cutting the deficit to three on a Kristi Colbenson three-point play. A Vig lay-up made it 63-61, but the Knights made only two field goals in the final four minutes.
Carleton committed 19 turnovers compared to 11 for the Blazers. CSB shot 29 free throws compared to 13 for the Knights, as the hosts held a 20-9 edge in successful free throws. The hosts held a 38-32 advantage on the glass.
The Knights end the regular season by hosting Gustavus on Saturday.
