No. 21 Trinity (Texas) saw a 46-33 second-half lead disappear but recovered to upset No. 4 Hardin-Simmons 67-61 at the South Sectional in front of 2,308 fans at the Mabee Complex in Abilene.
The Cowgirls, who lost for the first time on the season, went on a 16-2 run to take a 49-48 lead, but Trinity scored two possessions later and never trailed again. The Tigers went up 61-56 at the 2:45 mark but five straight points by senior point guard Terri Robinson tied the game at 61-61.
Trinity’s Jenna Smith then hit a baseline jumper with 43 seconds to go and the Cowgirls (27-1) turned the ball over with 18 to go. The Tigers (25-5) made four free throws down the stretch to finish the scoring.
Trinity opened the game with an 18-4 run.
All-American Kendra Anderson was brilliant for the Cowgirls with 33 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Claire Allan had 14 to lead Trinity. Megan Selmon and Melissa Carl added 11 and 10 points respectively in the balanced attack.
The win sends Trinity (25-5) to the sectional final against No. 3 Washington U. at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
