WASHINGTON
Craig Avallone, starting for the first time in four games scored a game-high 21 points and William Morley had 20 to lead No. 7 Catholic to a 78-60 victory over No. 21 Mary Washington at DuFour Center on Wednesday.
The win moves the Cardinals to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Eagles saw their 10-game winning streak end to fall to 11-2 and 2-1.
Kevin Wise added 12 points for Catholic, which hit a blistering 26 of 28 (92.9%) from the foul line. Cris Harrison led Mary Washington with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Dan Dupras had 10 points and six boards.
Avallone, who missed two games with a back injury, hit 8 of 11 from the field, all four of his free throws and tied Morley for the team lead in rebounds with six. Matt Hilleary was held to nine points and four rebounds, and point guard Adam Dickman totaled six points and a game-high seven assists.
After going 1-for-11 from 3-point range Saturday, the Cardinals hit 5 of 8 in the first half to take a 43-33 lead at the break. Dickman opened the scoring with a trey and the Cards sprinted to an 8-0 lead. The Eagles’ Evan Fowler (nine points, five assists) hit two free throws midway through the first half to knot the score at 17. CUA responded with a 16-3 run to forge ahead 33-20 with 7:27 left before halftime.
Mary Washington, which has lost 11 in a row to the Cardinals, whittled the lead to seven, 58-51, on a short Harrison jumper with 10:35 to go. It would get no closer. A Hilleary dunk off a Dickman feed with 4:24 remaining put CUA firmly in control, 69-55.
After going 11 of 14 from the line in the opening period, the Eagles missed their only attempt of the second half. The Cards made 16 of 17 in the first 20 minutes and 10 of 11 thereafter. Morley headed the parade by going 9-for-9.
