HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.
No. 4 Hampden-Sydney knocked in 12 of 15 free throw attempts and junior guard Jeff Monroe scored 14 points to lead the Tigers to a 52-45 victory over No. 3 Randolph-Macon in an ODAC showdown in front of an over flowing crowd in H-SC’s S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. With the win, the Tigers improve to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the ODAC while the Jackets fall to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in the ODAC.
Monroe’s 14 points paced the Tiger attack, while Lane Brooks finished with 11 points and Jason Holman 10 for the Tigers. Hampden-Sydney shot 35% (19-for-54) for the game, while outrebounding the Jackets, 43-34.
Hampden-Sydney’s defense did the trick on Macon, allowing the Jackets to shoot just 33% (19-for-56) for the game, including just 29% (9-for-31) in the second half. The Jackets were paced by Jared Mills with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Justin Wansley finished with 10 points and Kurt Bergmann seven points and 11 boards.
For the first time all year Hampden-Sydney trailed at the half, 27-24, as Randolph-Macon converted 40% (10 of 25) of its shots from the field, including four three pointers. The Jackets finished the half on a 13-7 run thanks in part of five points from senior guard Tim Smith, but the Tigers finished the half with a fantastic dribble penetration and dish off by Jeff Monroe on an assist to Jason Holman.
In the second half, Randolph-Macon ran out to a seven point lead 35-28 on a Kurt Bergmann layup and maintained that advantage by trading baskets with the Tigers on the next four trips down the floor. Jared Mills finished the Macon run with two of his team-high 14 points.
The Tigers made their run after Mills' bucket at 10:05 that gave the Jackets a 39-32 lead. Monroe led the charge with two layups, while senior forward Matt McKeag converted a three-point play with a layup and free throw to tie the contest at 39 with 7:29 to play. With the Tigers rallying, Macon freshman Justin Wansley stepped up and converted on three trips down the floor for the Jackets, who held their final lead of the game, 43-42, on Wansley’s last bucket.
A free throw by Marcus Gregory with 3:07 to play put the Tigers ahead 46-45 and gave the team the lead for good. A Brandon Randall jumper at the 2:09 mark and free throws by McKeag and Monroe iced the game for the Tigers.
