OSHKOSH, Wis.
To steal a few words from Mark Twain, any reports of the UW-Oshkosh Titans’ demise have been grossly exaggerated.
Memories of the Titans’ painful 1-3 start to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season continue to fade, after posting a 63-59 win over conference leader and seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night at Kolf Sports Center.
No. 18 UW-Oshkosh found itself in a dogfight early on. Scott Sowinski made a layup with 10:56 to play in the first half to put the Titans up by seven, 12-5, before the Pointers stepped up to tie the game at 17-all with 4:44 remaining.
UW-Oshkosh went ahead 22-19 with 2:08 to play when Tim Dworak hit on a lay up, but the Pointers quickly responded and seemed to grab the momentum when Neal Krajnik hit a long 3-pointer as time expired to give the Pointers a 26-24 lead at half time.
The Pointers took early control in the second half building a six-point lead in the opening minutes when Jason Kalsow dropped in a lay-up to put UW-Stevens Point ahead, 30-24.
Again, the Titans rallied, however. After missing all three of his attempts in the first half, Nick Scherer hit a long 3-pointer from the corner to tie the contest at 35-35 with 15:27 to play.
The teams swapped the lead three more times before Andy Fernholz hit a pair of free throws to put the Titans ahead 53-51 with 4:17 to play. UW-Oshkosh never gave up the lead, holding off a furious Pointer offense, and escaped with the lead.
Scherer connected on two of three free throws before Nate Miller hit a long three pointer with 41 seconds left to seal the deal for the Titans.
Winners of four straight games, UW-Oshkosh (14-3, 5-3 WIAC) was led by Sowinski’s 17-point performance. Defending WIAC Player-of-the-Year Tim Dworak – who entered the game No. 10 in the nation in scoring with 22.8 points per game – scored 16 points with 10 rebounds.
His offensive output marked the 54th consecutive game with double-digit scoring, and 72nd time in the last 73 contests. Miller added 11 while Scherer finished with eight.
The Titans shot just 54% from the field in the game, much better than the Division III-best 36% that UW-Stevens Point had been allowing so far this season. In fact, UW-Oshkosh shot a blistering 62.5% in the second half as it pulled away for its fourth consecutive win.
Josh Iserloth finished with 18 points to lead the Pointers, who dropped to 15-2, 6-2 in the league. Kalsow and Nick Bennett added 14 points each for UW-Stevens Point, as well.
With the win, the Titans jumped from fifth place in the league to a tie for second place.
