John Carroll snapped Capital's nine-game winning streak and 10-game home court win streak with a 76-74 Ohio Athletic Conference men's win.
With the win, John Carroll (11-5, 8-2 OAC) pulls even with Capital (13-4, 8-2) in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks handed the Crusaders their last two losses, today and Dec. 14 (74-64 in University Heights) to sweep the season and hold a potential tiebreaker.
John Carroll made eight of its first 10 shots and seized control of the game early and lead by 14 points, 48-34, with a minute left in the half and took a 48-36 lead into the locker room. Matthew Grogan got John Carroll off to their hot start scoring 17 points in the frame.
Capital would open up the second half with a rally as a Tony Ruberg 3-pointer with 14:25 left brought the margin to six, 55-49. John Carroll would retake control and extend the lead back out to 14 over the next five minutes. Capital would rally again as Chuck Bihn sank a free throw to bring the Crusaders within two, 67-65, with 4:24 left in the game. The Blue Streaks would hold on over the final minutes converting three free throws in the final six seconds to secure the win.
Capital junior Adam Stolly led the Crusaders' efforts matching his season total with a game-high 21 points. Ruberg was the only other Crusader in double figures with 17, while Grogan led three Blue Streaks in double-digits with 18.
