Trailing 69-64, Hamline (10-9, 6-8 MIAC) got a 3-pointer from leading scorer Tyler Petrich with 34 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two. Forced to foul, Hamline sent Bethel's Andy Gilbert to the line, where he hit both shots to push the lead to 71-67.
Bethel (12-7, 10-4) fouled shortly after the inbounds, however, and Williams hit both free throws to cut the lead to 71-69 with 21 seconds left. Hamline's fullcourt press failed to generate a turnover and the Pipers were forced to foul, but with a chance to ice the game, Joe Madson missed both free throws with 12 seconds left.
After Luke Sturm rebounded the second miss, Hamline moved up the floor but the ball came loose at the top of the key. Williams, who had made only seven 3-pointers all year and had not attempted one in the first 39:59 of the game, hit nothing but net as time expired, bringing Hamline fans onto the court in celebration.
The Pipers shot 46 percent from the field while holding the Royals (12-7, 10-4) to 38% shooting from the floor. Hamline was 6-for-12 from 3-point range. The Royals were held to just 6-of-23 shooting from three.
Petrich led all scorers with 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Josh Hanson added 14 points. Paul Muenchow chipped in eight for the Pipers, who won their fifth conference game in a row.
Bethel was paced by Gilbert's 22 points on 6-for-16 shooting and 9-for-9 from the line. Joe Dykhoff added 16 points for the Royals.
