SWARTHMORE, Pa.
Washington College fell to host Swarthmore for the second time this season, losing to the Garnet Tide, 67-61 this evening. Swarthmore, now 8-12 overall and 4-4 in league play, moves into a tie with Haverford for second place in the Centennial Conference East Division. The Shoremen, now 7-13 and 3-4, remain one game back of a possible conference playoff bid.
Swarthmore led, 33-29, at the half and led by 11, at 61-50 with 3:39 to play, before the Shoremen rallied to cut the deficit to two points late in the contest. Freshman forward Jonathan Webb capped off the the 11-2 spurt by making one of two free throws with 49 seconds to play to trim the lead to 63-61. The Garnet's David Pearce hit a clutch basket with nine seconds left to give Swarthmore a four-point lead and Chris Loeffler sunk two free throws with three seconds to go to provide the final margin.
Swarthmore has now held the Shoremen, who entered the contest having won five of their last six games, to their two lowest scoring outputs against Division III opponents this season. The Garnet came away with an 85-62 win in Chestertown on Dec. 11.
Webb finished with game highs of 24 points and six assists and also collected a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Colin Camacho was the only other Shoreman in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
Swarthmore's Blair Haxel tossed in 15 points and grabbed 11 boards in the contest, while Loeffler tallied 16 points off the bench. Pearce and Matt Gustafson each tallied 11 points. Eran Ganot contributed 10 points.
The Shoremen, who began the night leading the Centennial Conference in free-throw accuracy, were just 11-for-19 at the line in the loss. Swarthmore finished 16-for-18 at the charity stripe.
