ABILENE, Texas
The McMurry Indians earned a berth in the American Southwest Conference Tournament and made NCAA history on Saturday, clipping Mary Hardin-Baylor 80-79 in overtime at Kimbrell Arena.
With the victory, McMurry moved to 17-6 overall and 11-1 for first place in the ASC West Division. It also marked the school's seventh OT win of the season (in as many games), breaking the all divisions record of six held by several programs.
Juan Muniz, who led McMurry with 24 points and 11 rebounds, scored a four-point play with 4 seconds remaining to send the contest into the extra session tied 68-all. He scored seven of the team's 12 points in the overtime.
Justin Hejl led the visitors with 22 points as UMHB dropped to 11-12, 5-7. Ralph Viverette chipped in with 21 points and 12 rebounds and Brandon Gatlin added 15 points.
Kelon Lewis (17) and Kendrick Ellis (10) also scored in double figures for McMurry, which trailed 57-40 with 8 minutes, 21 seconds left in regulation. The Indians went on a 40-22 run over the last 13:21 to cap the frenzied comeback before a crowd of 1,000.
