We did some things a little differently for our second Team of the Week. First of all, we're playing a three-forward offense on the men's side because we had too many great nominees in the frontcourt. We could have named six forwards to the men's team. On the women's team, we've got twin towers Kerry Walter and Renee Zando because each had great numbers. The scoop on our honorees: Calvin senior center Kerry Walters scored 36 points and added 21 rebounds in a pair of Knight victories. She shot 14-for-28 from the floor, 8-for-10 from the line and added three blocked shots and four steals. Gallaudet 5-10 junior forward Dawn Birley averaged 22.5 points in two games last week and added 27 rebounds and 11 steals as the Bison went 2-0. Rowan senior guard Jenn Derby averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds, leading the undefeated Profs in rebounding in both wins while adding 6.5 assists per game and five steals. Binghamton freshman guard Bess Greenberg led the Colonials in their upset win against defending NCAA champion NYU with a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Greenberg then made the all-tournament team at the Gettysburg Tournament, scoring 25 points with 10 rebounds and 12 steals as Binghamton captured its third tournament championship of the season. Maryville (Mo.) sophomore forward John Jones averaged 27.7 points and seven rebounds in three games, including a 33-point performance against McMurry and 31 points against Lindenwood. He shot 29-for-42 from the floor and an near-perfect 23-for-25 from the foul line. Simpson center Adam Doll is another repeat winner from last week's team. Doll led the Storm to a 3-0 week and shot 57% from the floor (17-for-30) and 85 percent from the free throw line (18-for-21) as he scored 52 points. He grabbed 46 boards during the three-game span. The junior is only 17 points away from 1,000 for his career. St. Norbert junior guard Mike Heun scored 30 points to lead the Green Knights to a 74-64 victory over Flagler in the title game of the Tropical Impressions Classic in St. Augustine, Fla. He was 6-for-9 from three-point range en route to 30 points and the tournament MVP. He finished the week averaging 24 points, shooting 8-for-9 from the foul line, and adding eight rebounds and four assists. Moravian forward Jason Moran averaged 23.5 points, six rebounds, three steals and 2.5 blocked shots per game. The junior won the MVP award at Moravian's Greyhound Classic for the third time in his career, shooting 17-for-23 from the floor and 13-for-18 from the foul line. |
