This was a week for centers, especially on the women's side, where two new centers made the squad. On the men's side, there were, again, a surplus of quality forwards. Thanks to all who nominated, and we hope nobody's nomination got lost in yesterday's server difficulties. The scoop on our honorees: Mt. Union senior guard Suzi Venet scored 54 points in two games, but knew how to take the ball (16 steals) and dish it (18 assists). She was 17-for-20 from the foul line for the Purple Raiders. Wisconsin-Stevens Point guard Jessica Ott put points on the board as well, scoring 57 of them in two games while shooting 20-for-37 from the floor and 10-for-19 from three-point range. Ott was a member of our inaugural Team of the Week two weeks ago.
Wooster forward Katie Montague (pictured), also returning from two weeks ago, averaged 25.5 points over two games, shooting 20-for-39 from the floor and 10-for-14 from the foul line while blocking three shots. Washington University sophomore center Aliza Fischer tallied 47 points in 62 minutes over two games, shooting 16-for-23 from the floor and 15-for-19 from the line. Fischer averaged 10 rebounds. Gallaudet sophomore center Ronda Miller averaged 33.3 points, 14.3 rebounds, 5.3 blocked shots and four steals in three games last week, including a 39-point performance against Franklin & Marshall on 18-for-26 shooting and 36 points against conference rival Salisbury State. It will be intriguing to match these two 6-2 sophomore centers come All-America time!
Ohio Northern's Jeremy Thompson defined the term shooting guard, going 14-for-26 from three point range and averaging 32.5 points in two games. Thompson scored 37 against Baldwin-Wallace and 'only' 28 against John Carroll, breaking his streak of three consecutive 30-point games. Bridgewater State junior forward Mark Gonsalves has been on fire, shooting 64% from the field and scoring 88 points (29.3 average) in a 3-0 week. He also averaged seven rebounds. At the power forward position is Thiel junior Richard Williamson, who averaged 21 points and 12.7 rebounds over three games last week while adding a total of eight steals and five blocked shots. Hope senior center David Meulenberg was near-perfect from the floor in two games, shooting 17-for-19 from the field en route to 46 points in two games. This also included a 41-minute performance against Calvin in which he did not turn the ball over once. |
