Maryville finishes strong to upset Centre 70-62

The Maryville College men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a key regional road win at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky by the score of 70-62 on Sunday evening.

 

The Colonels out paced the Scots 31-27 at the half, but the road warriors out scored their host 43-31 in the final period.

 

With five minutes left in the challenge, Centre went on an 8-2 run giving them a 51-45 advantage. MC battled back to only a basket, 55-53, with less than four minutes left on the clock. The Scots took the lead for good at the 3:09 when Spencer Shoffner deposited a driving lay-up, converting the extra free throw upon being fouled. Maryville expanded their 58-57 lead on their next possession when Dante Hoppa drained a trey at the 2:28 mark. MC's stingy defense forced consecutive turnovers and Tyler Spicer tallied a tip-in basket to make the score 63-57 with less than two minutes remaining. Maryville completed their 12-for-14 effort for the day at the charity stripe to celebrate their season opening victory.

 

Maryville (1-0) was paced by Tyler Spicer's 17-point effort. The junior went 7-for-11 from the floor while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Spencer Shoffner also deposited 17 points from both inside and beyond the arc. Dante Hoppa finished 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-5 from long distance for 11 points. The Scots out rebounded the Colonels 32-29 while finishing with a 48% effort (25-for-52) from the floor.

 

Centre (0-1) was led by Matt Gump's game-high 18 points. Carson Ebert added 14 points for the Colonels.

 

The Scots will now prepare for their home opener next Saturday. MC will host Emory & Henry College at 3:00 in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
