PITMAN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University junior preseason First-Team All-American Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown), the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year, has been selected New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season. The accolade is for week nine of the 2018-19 season, the league office announced on January 7.

Toney, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound two-year team captain, claimed NJAC Player of the Week distinction for the fourth time in his career after being a three-time winner as a sophomore—the last time coming on January 15, 2018—in a season in which he became one of the breakout stars in Division III.

Toney was also named to the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Honorable Mention for the third time this season.

In NJCU's only game of the week, Toney helped lead NJCU to its 10th win of the season, scoring 25 points as the Gothic Knights knocked off Stockton University, 79-67, on January 5.

NJCU, now 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC, won for the fourth time in five games and trailed just 18 seconds in the entire game, to move back into a first-place tie in the league.

Toney scored 25+ points in a game for the 10th time in his All-American career and buried five or more three-pointers for the fourth time this season and seventh time as a collegian. He produced 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting including 5-of-8 three-point success while making all four foul shots. Meanwhile, he grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes. He did not turn the ball over.

In the first half, NJCU manufactured a 17-1 outburst to seize a 17-point, 31-14 lead and Toney scored five during the stretch.

Toney scored at least 20 points in a game for the 25th time in his career, the 22nd time in his last 41 games, the fourth game in a row, the sixth time in his last seven games and the eighth time this season. Toney exploded for the 10th 25+ point performance of his career and his third 25+ point game of the season. Toney scored in double figures for the 54th time in 70 career games.

Toney moved into a share of 21st place in NJCU history with 1,150 points, matching three-year standout Omar Cooper, who had 1,150 points from 1994-96 and 1999-00.

On the season, Toney has scored 240 points with 96 rebounds (17 offensive, 79 defensive) in 14 games over 373 minutes. He has added 14 assists, 10 blocks and nine steals, shooting .439 from the field (75-171), .419 from three-point distance (36-86) and 80.6 percent from the line (54-67). He is averaging 17.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.7 blocks and 0.6 steals per game and has seen his scoring average climb 3.0 points since December 1.

In the NJAC statistical rankings through January 6, he currently ranks third in defensive rebounding (5.6 per game),  fourth in scoring and rebounding, fourth in three-pointers made per game (2.6), fifth in three-point percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, 10th in blocked shots, 15th in field goal percentage, and 27th in offensive rebounding (1.2 per game).
