Captains Breeze Into USA South Semi's With 92-37 Win Over Mary Baldwin

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior guard Jerlisa Bowser (Fredericksburg, Va.) tied a career-high with 17 points and set a new career mark for dimes with five assists in a blowout victory for the Captains in the USA South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. CNU breezed to a 92-37 win over Mary Baldwin (5-14), improving to 23-3 overall this season and advancing to Friday's semifinal game at home against #3 seeded Ferrum College.

Ferrum beat Shenandoah University in the opening round, 79-54, and will travel to Newport News on Friday, February 25 for the semifinals. CNU, the #2 seed in the tournament, will play host at 7:00 pm.

Mary Baldwin kicked off the game with a surge, rushing out to an 8-2 lead with 15:57 to go in the first half, but Christopher Newport would soon respond. The Fighting Squirrels were held to just 10 more points the rest of the half as CNU opened up a 44-18 edge at the break.

Bowser was key in the run, scoring 12 points in the first 20 minutes, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. She was 5-of-7 from the floor to lead the way. Senior Chelsie Schweers added seven points and Barbara Davis had six for the Captains.

CNU shot 55.9% in the first half, knocking down 19-of-34 shots while Mary Baldwin was held to just 22.6% from the field on 7-of-31 attempts.

In the second half, the defense continued to shine, holding the Squirrels to just 20.7% shooting. Meanwhile, the Captains offense cooled slightly, but still managed a 48-point stanza. Four Captains would finish in double figures, as Schweers poured in 13 in the second half to finish with a game-high 20. She was joined by Bowser's career-high-tying 17, while sophomore Kelly Halverson hit three trey's and had 13 points and rookie Tia Perry finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Mary Baldwin was led by Kim Jefferson, who hit three three-pointers and finished with nine points. Brittany Eubanks and Denise Johnson each had five rebounds while Johnson added nine points as well.

CNU shot 50% from the field, hitting 33-of-66 in the game, including 7-of-12 from long-range.
