GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team set the nets ablaze with an incredible shooting performance on the way to a 91-67 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the consolation game of the Stockton University Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
Gettysburg (1-1) canned 35-of-61 field goals for a shooting percentage of 57.4. The team also knocked down 12-of-16 (75 percent) three-pointers. Those marks are the best by the program since shooting percentages were first kept in 2000. The 91 points tied the best scoring output since a 94-point effort against Ursinus College in 2004.
Junior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) paced Gettysburg with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds. She finished 10-of-15 from the floor and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) knocked down a trio of threes on the way to 24 points.
Western Connecticut (0-2) broke out with the first eight points of the game, but Gettysburg came back with the next nine and took its first lead on a jumper by freshman Olivia Briggs (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City). The Bullets ended a high-scoring first quarter with a 27-23 advantage.
Gettysburg was just starting to heat up. After hitting less than 50 percent of their attempts in the first quarter, the Bullets improved their shooting touch in each of the next three frames. After falling behind 32-30 early in the second quarter, the Orange and Blue posted an 18-0 run and led 48-34 at halftime.
Gettysburg's lead hit 21 (57-36) on a jumper by Gibbons just before the mid-point of the third quarter. An old-fashioned three-point play by freshman Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) made it 72-42 late in the third quarter.
The Bullets took only 11 shots attempts in the final quarter, but came away with eight makes, including 3-of-4 tries from beyond the arc. The lead hit a game-high 31 (79-48) on a three-pointer by freshman Kiera Cesareo (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) with 7:48 left.
Freshman Lindsay Hiner (New Britain, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) hit all four of her three-pointers for 12 points, while Cesareo tallied 10 points. Freshman Tyler Keohan (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) posted eight points and five assists. Junior Jamie Relin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) dished out seven helpers as Gettysburg finished with 23 assists against just 13 turnovers.
Jancy Sherwood led Western Connecticut with 22 points, while Alecia Dulaire posted 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Gettysburg opens its Centennial Conference schedule at Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 6 p.m.
