What others say: "Steve was a unique player. His ability to handle and create for teammates and himself was fun to watch and coach. It’s never easy to lead any league in scoring and assists in the same year. To do it in the CCIW and every year for four years is doubly hard." – Bosko Djurickovic, former Carthage men's basketball coach
Where are they now: Newly named head coach for Carthage College
Career synopsis: It takes a really amazing player to earn D3hoops.com All-America honors as a freshman. We know that if we do that, we are basically committing to considering this person for our All-America team for four years, or having to answer questions about why we left him or her off. That's why Steve Djurickovic is one of just two Division III men's basketball players to make the list four times. (Our All-America team started in 1997-98.) The son of two CCIW champion basketball coaches, Djurickovic was surely going to start for his father's team from Day One. His mother, Rebecca Djurickovic, coached women's basketball at North Park and was head coach of the CCIW's first women's basketball champ, in 1988. While at 6-3, Steve Djurickovic had the size to play the 3, he was given the point guard slot and immediately became a four-year mismatch. He didn't lead the team in scoring in his first game, but he did score 24 points and dish out seven assists in an 85-69 win against Eastern at a tournament at Westminster (Pa.) and, truly indicative of what was to come, he finished 10-for-13 from the foul line. Later that season, he scored 39 points in 36 minutes against North Central (Ill.), including going 23-for-27 from the foul line. He had the team-high in points 19 times in 25 games as a freshman and ended up at 23.2 points plus a team-high 4.3 assists per game that year. Djurickovic went on to set the NCAA Division III records for most free throws made (839) and attempted (997), an 84.2% clip. He led the CCIW in points and assists all four seasons, and improved his outside shooting as well. His best all-around year was certainly his junior season, when he scored 24.4 points per game, averared 7.3 assists, shot 53% from the floor, 41% from 3-point range and 88% from the line and led Carthage to the Sweet 16 en route to being named D3hoops.com men's basketball Player of the Year. That was Carthage's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2002. He finished with 2,547 career points, one of 20 players in Division III history to reach the 2,500-point milestone.
