Fresh off its No. 1 ranking in the Top 25 poll, UW-Stevens Point defeated No. 8 UW-Whitewater 79-67 on Wednesday night.

UW-Stevens Point seized control midway through the first half with a 22-0 run that gave the Pointers a 20-point halftime lead. The Warhawks cut the lead to nine on a KJ Evans' three-point play with 12 minutes to play. But Tyler Tillema immediately answered with a three for the Pointers whose lead was never at risk the rest of the way.

The Pointers made 12 of 23 3-pointers, including six by Trevor Hass. He scored 20 points and Tillema added 17 for UW-Stevens Point (6-0, 2-0 in conference). Evans had 24 points and seven boards for the Warhawks (5-2, 0-2).

UW-Stout took its new Top 25 ranking on the road, and the 19th ranked Blue Devils lost at UW-River Falls, 70-64. UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville are unranked for now, but they are still undefeated in conference. The Eagles won 62-54 at Oshkosh and the Pioneers won at 71-56 at Eau Claire.

Outside the WIAC, Merchant Marine defeated rival Coast Guard 78-76 in double-overtime. Merchant Marine missed a layup with three seconds left in the second extra session, but the Mariners' Nick Sergio grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He sunk two free throws and sunk the Bears.

Messiah continued its hot start with a 70-65 win over Hood. Brad Bolen had 30 points, including the 1,000th of his career for the Falcons (8-0, 3-0 in conference). After trailing by 19 at half, DePauw battled back to within two in the final minute, but Pat Haggin's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark and visiting Rose-Hulman escaped with a 64-61 win.

Vassar accomplished one thing on Wednesday night that hadn't been done since last year and another that hadn't been done ever. The Brewers dealt No. 3 Montclair State a regular season loss for the first time since February 2012 and picked up their first ever win over a ranked opponent, 63-58. Full story

Vassar's defense has allowed the second fewest points per game in the country this season and the Brewers put on the defensive clamps when they needed to. They held Montclair State scoreless for the final 4:08 of the game, giving themselves a chance to turn a three-point deficit into a big victory.

Vassar, which did not receive any votes in this week's Top 25 ranking, improves to 6-0 while the Red Hawks slip to 6-1.

No. 9 UW-Whitewater defeated No. 19 UW-Stevens Point on the women's side of Wednesday's WIAC showdown. The Warhawks' next two games will come in Las Vegas at the D3hoops Classic against No. 15 Carthage and Ohio Northern. No. 22 UW-Oshkosh stayed perfect with a 51-42 win at La Crosse.

William Paterson head coach Erin Monahan earned her 400th career victory as the Pioneers mashed Rowan 95-64. Monahan is 400-157 in 21 seasons at William Paterson.

John Carroll, which just entered the Top 25, won at Heidelberg 90-79 behind another big night for Melissa Spahar (19 points, 13 rebounds). The Blue Streaks are 6-0 and have won all their games by double-digits.

Bowdoin, which is just outside the Top 25, held off Maine-Farmington 70-65. The Polar Bears will head to Florida after Christmas to play two New England opponents, Rivier and Gordon.
