Marietta took a second consecutive game from Mount Union, the Thunder and the Thunder remained unbeaten, DePauw lost a battle of women's Tigers and the Stormy Petrels' streak kept chugging along in Saturday's NCAA Division III basketball action.

Marietta finished the weekend sweep of No. 9 Mount Union, sending the Purple Raiders to their third loss in four games, by a 93-89 score. The Pioneers struggled from the perimeter, shooting just 5-for-19, but were nearly perfect from the foul line, making 19 of 20 in the win. Lukas Isaly led the Pioneers with 22 points, while Mason Lydic added 19 to pace four scorers in double figures. Marietta (7-1, 7-1 OAC) took the lead on an Isaly 3-pointer with 14:37 to play and the Pioneers led the rest of the way. Collen Gurley scored a game-high 25 for Mount Union but was rolling on the floor in pain after a scramble for the ball at the end of the game.

"That's two great wins this weekend. Our kids just battled and made a lot of plays. We got a little tentative down the stretch, but Lukas (Isaly) was huge stepping up and knocking down all those free throws," said Marietta head coach Jon VanderWal. "They are a really good team with a ton of firepower and to take two from them on back to back nights is really unheard of."

No. 5 Wheaton improved to 9-0 as Nyameye Adom went 8-for-14 from the floor en route to 25 points in an 81-55 win against Carroll. Cade Alioth earned his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the win. The Thunder scored the first nine points and finished the first half on a 14-2 win to take a 42-16 lead into the break. The Thunder are in first place in the CCIW, two and a half games ahead of Illinois Wesleyan, which is also unbeaten but has only been able to get four games in.

Trine got 23 points from Brent Cox and another 21 from Nick Bowman and the No. 3 Thunder remained unbeaten, winning at Hope 73-67 on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder (13-0) came out ahead after a second half which featured four lead changes and which saw the Flying Dutchmen (4-4, 2-2 MIAA) cut the lead to three points twice in the final 90 seconds. But both of those times, Hope missed the second of two free throws and was unable to get any closer. Trine stands at 4-0 in MIAA games, tied at the top with Albion (7-2, 4-0), 97-55 winners at Olivet on Saturday.

No. 14 DePauw bounced back from its first loss of the season, defeating Denison 71-58. Nolan Ginther, who had 13 points and seven turnovers in Thursday's loss to Denison, put up 29 points on 11-for-16 shooting in Saturday's win. Ginther shot 11-for-16 from the floor, while Aaron Shank went 7-for-11 on his way to 15 points. (The rest of the team was a combined 11-for-28.)

Rowan Anderson responded with a tough jumper in the paint and then a 3-pointer to stake Whitworth to a 64-60 lead. PLU tied the game at 64 on Ethan Smith's free throws with 1:52 left, but the Lutes did not score again as the Pirate defense made three key stops down the stretch. Miguel Lopez hit a driving layup with 31 seconds to go and Fitzgerald was fouled after a PLU turnover with 3.8 seconds left. Liam Fitzgerald led the Pirates with 13 points, while Seth Hall had a double-double for PLU (5-1, 5-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The MIAC managed to get just one game in on Saturday, and it saw St. Mary's (Minn.) improve to 4-1, defeating the Royals 66-58. Eli Cave played all 40 minutes for the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 24. St. Mary's scored the game's final 15 points. Meanwhile, St. John's hasn't played since Feb. 6, and neither has St. Thomas. Keene State placed six scorers in double figures, led by 24 points and 16 rebounds from Jeff Hunter, in a 103-88 win against Rhode Island College. The Owls improved to 5-1, 5-1 in the Little East. Keene took over first place in the LEC by a half-game, as Max Lee’s 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in overtime capped a frantic comeback in the closing 14-plus minute to action and lifted Eastern Connecticut to an 87-85 win over UMass Dartmouth.

Southern Maine made just five of its 13 free throws, but thankfully, the game didn't come down to that as Trevor Ward went coast to coast for a layup with 1.2 seconds left to give the Huskies the lead for the final time in an 85-83 win against the University of New England. It was the first game of the season for both teams. Ward and teammate Jacobe Thomas share game-high honors with 22 points apiece. It was the first outside competition for either team in 364 days. Babson also got on the floor for the first time and got 22 apiece from Colin Bradanse and James Welch in an 80-69 win against New England College.

Saturday's women's action

Millsaps (8-1) got two offensive rebounds in the final 30 seconds but could not tie the game and Sydni Donovan hit two free throws to secure the game with six seconds left.

Wittenberg picked up its first win of the season and dealt No. 7 DePauw its first loss in an ugly 41-37 win. DePauw (5-1) outrebounded Wittenberg by 18 and had a 20-1 advantage on the offensive glass, but the Tigers in black and yellow also shot 10-for-59. Jade Simpson had seven points and six rebounds for the Tigers of Wittenberg (1-3). DePauw plays undefeated Ohio Wesleyan in a home-and-home series next weekend. Wittenberg has played all four of its games against those two teams.

No. 12 Maryville (Tenn.) held off LaGrange 74-63 to sweep its two-game series with the Panthers and push its record to 10-0. Kelley Wandell's 3-pointer staked the Scots to a 50-36 lead midway through the third period but LaGrange battled back in the fourth period. The Panthers cut the Scots' lead to 65-62 on Jahpera McEachin's juimper with 3:31 to play but Courtney Carruthers responded immediately for Maryville (Tenn.) with a jumper and LaGrange only managed one free throw the rest of the way. Jordan Heifner scored a career-high 21 points for Maryville, which closes the regular season next season with two home games against Piedmont. The Lions eased to 11-3, 9-0 in the USA South with a 84-33 win over winless Agnes Scott.

The latest installment of the Rivalry was a lopsided win for the top-ranked Flying Dutch, as No. 1 Hope rolled over Calvin, 89-56. Hope (10-0, 4-0 MIAA) led 42-18 at the half and none of its starters played more than 19 minutes in the game. Widener also remained perfect in the MAC Commonwealth and overall with a 90-69 win over Albright. The Pride shot 52 percent from the field and hit 10 three-pointers, half of them coming from Helena Salmon who had 17 points. Widener and Messiah are scheduled to play twice later this season.

The 2020-21 season will always be a memorable one for the New Jersey City University women's basketball team, as the program won its sixth consecutive game to open the season, the best in program history. The Gothic Knights sprinted to the end of the game on a 24-4 win in pulling away from William Paterson 62-46, sweeping the weekend series from the Pioneers. Senior wing Dayjah Anderson exploded for 24 points on a sizzling 11-of-18 shooting to spark the Knights.

For Millikin, it was a fast start rather than a fast finish. The Big Blue blew the doors off the gym with a 28-9 first quarter and went on to defeat Elmhurst 70-59. Ten players scored for the Big Blue led by fab frosh Elyce Knudsen with 14 points.
