Two Division III national players of the year and the only coach to win three consecutive men’s basketball titles at this level will be inducted into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame this fall.

The Hall of Fame announced its 2025 class will include Babson guard Joey Flannery, Calvin forward Steve Honderd, and North Park coach Dan McCarrell.

Flannery is one of the most decorated Division III men’s basketball players of the last 25 years.

After being named first-team All-American as a sophomore and junior, Flannery had a phenomenal senior season at Babson. He led the Beavers to a 31-2 record and a thrilling win over Augustana in the 2017 national championship game, sealing the win with a chase-down block in the closing minute. Flannery was named consensus National Player of the Year and the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He finished his career ranked eighth on the all-time Division III scoring list.

Honderd also captured Division III’s highest accolades while playing at Calvin in the early 1990s. As a freshman, he helped the Knights reach their first Division III national semifinal in 1990, including scoring 33 points in a win over Hope in the Tournament's second round. Two seasons later, Honderd led Calvin to the 1992 national championship and was named that Tournament’s Most Outstanding player.

He finished his career by winning National Player of the Year in 1993 and is still the Knights' career leader for points (2,469) and field goal percentage (62.8 percent).

McCarrell was the first head coach in Division III men’s basketball’s greatest dynasty, winning three consecutive national championships at North Park from 1978-1980. The Vikings made the Division III Tournament five straight seasons and went 17-4 under McCarrell. After winning 295 games in 17 seasons at North Park, McCarrell went to Division II Mankato State in Minnesota and won 284 more before retiring in 2001.

Two other Division III members also have Hall of Fame inductees, though their players competed in the NAIA – Bob Kauffman of Guilford and Bill Warden of North Central (Ill.).

The other inductees are:

  • Seger Bonifant, D2 West Liberty State
  • Lambert Shell, D2 Bridgeport
  • Mario Elie, D2 American International
  • Brandon Cole, NAIA John Brown University
  • Eric Kline, NAIA Northern State
  • Herb Magee, D2 head coach at Philadelphia Textile/Philadelphia University/Jefferson University
  • Ed Bilik (contributor), NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee member and Springfield College Athletic Director

The induction celebration will take place October 31 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida.
