Wisniewski tallies 22, but Edgewood College falls in overtime

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Edgewood College's Ben Wisniewski hit a jump shot with two seconds left in regulation play to tie the game, but the Eagles couldn't overcome Valley City State in the overtime period and fell to the Vikings 77-72. Wisniewski's shot capped a 6-1 run for the Eagles in the final three minutes of the second half.

Playing in the North Central College/Holiday Inn Select Tipoff Classic, Edgewood College (1-1) opened an early lead by going on a 14-4 run to start the game. Wisniewski and Cashton Craig each hit three-pointer baskets to spark the Eagles. The Eagles maintained the lead most of the first half, until Valley City State (3-4) tied the game with a free throw and then took a 30-28 lead with 1:32 to play. However, Wisniewski scored on each of the Eagles final two possessions to give Edgewood College a 32-30 halftime lead.

The Eagles threatened to pull away from the Vikings early in the second half. Kent Faurote hit a pair of three-point baskets to cap a 14-8 run to start the second half and give the Eagles a 46-38 advantage. Valley City State (N.D.) then rolled off eight straight points to tie the game and eventually went ahead by five points at 63-58 with three minutes left to play.

Craig provided the boost the Eagles needed by hitting his fourth three-point basket in four attempts on the night to cut the Vikings' lead to 63-61 with 1:26 left in regulation time. With 25 seconds to go, Michael Gehring drew a foul, but only hit one of two free throws to bring the Eagles closer at 63-62. Edgewood College sent the Vikings' Calvin Kraft to the free throw line with 14 seconds left, but he only converted one of two free throws, setting up Wisniewski's clutch shot.

Jeff Barczak scored a putback layup and Faurote nailed a three-point shot to give the Eagles a 69-66 lead with less than four minutes to play in overtime. The Eagles led at 72-71 when the Vikings took over for good. Aaron Duske made two free throws to give Valley City State the lead, while the Eagles missed a three-point try on the other end. A layup and two more Viking free throws sealed the game.

Wisniewski finished the game with a team-high 22 points and five assists. Craig went 4-for-4 from the three-point line to finish with 18 points. The transfer sophomore is shooting 75 percent (6-for-8) from the three-point line in his first two games as an Eagle. Faurote came off the bench to hit three three-pointers of his own and finish with 16 points. He also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Barczak chipped in eight points and seven boards. The Eagles were outscored by the Vikings at the free throw line 23-14.

Kraft led Valley City State with 23 points while DJ Carroll added 15. The Vikings are an NAIA Division I member of the Dakota Athletic Conference.

Edgewood College will play the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles will face either Bluffton University or host school North Central College at that time.
