(Buffalo, NY) – The Medaille College men's basketball team entertained co-AMCC leading La Roche College this afternoon and the two teams put on quite a show. However, when the dust settled the Mavs found themselves on the wrong end of a (71-65) score in a highly competitive game.
Medaille faced a very strong La Roche squad in this one and the Redhawks led for most of the game. Both teams would go on runs but the Mavs were never able to regain the lead after relinquishing it five minutes into play. In the second half Medaille would pull within one point on several occasions but the Redhawks responded each time.
A pair of seniors put together strong efforts with Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) leading the way for the second night in a row. He finished with a game high (25) points and did so on (11 of 16) shooting from the floor. Fellow fourth year teammate Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) poured in (20) points and pulled down (6) rebounds in the tough loss.
The Mavs found themselves in a nine point hole at the break but clawed back early in the second half to trim the lead to three with (17:54) remaining. From that point on, each team would counter the other with mini-runs of their own which made for an exciting atmosphere in the Sullivan Center.
Senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) continued his assault of the glass as he pulled down (9) more boards on the day. He is averaging (9.5) rebounds per game this year, best on the team.
The loss snaps a two game win streak and drops the Mavs to (9-5) overall and (5-2) in conference play. Next up for Medaille is a road contest on Saturday (1/15) at Penn State-Altoona where they will take on the Lions at 5:00pm.
