RICHARDSON, TX (02.12.11) - First of all, the UT Dallas men's basketball team earned an eighth straight trip tot he postseason with a 92-67 rout of Louisiana College Saturday afternoon. Then, less than a hour later the Comets learned that they will be hosting the American Southwest Conference Tournament thanks to help from around the league.
The Comets (now 17-5, 13-4 ASC) used their highest-scoring half of the season to jump out to a 55-25 lead on LC at the break at UTD shot 61.8 percent (21-of-34) as a team and hit seven three-pointers over the first 20 minutes of the game. UTD continued with the hot hand in the second half, hitting 14-of-26 shots (53.8%) as the majority of the half was played by the Comet reserves.
Junior point guard Greg Chiasson led the Comets with 21 points and was well on his way to a triple-double as he finished the afternoon with six assists and five rebounds in just 23 minutes of play. Junior Chris Barnes added 18 points and sophomore Reese Dahse came of the bench for 13 points to round out the Comets in double figures. In all, 12 of the 13 UTD players that saw action scored in the contest.
The Wildcats (now 10-11, 9-8 ASC) scored the first five points of the game and looked to off to a hot start, but UTD quickly silenced the visitors, using a 9-0 run over a short span of less than two minutes to grab a 15-7 lead with 15:38 left in the first half and never looked back. The Comets took their first 20-point lead with 8:43 left before the break when freshman Carter Nash drained a three to give UTD a 34-12 advantage. The Comets would never trail by fewer than 21 points for the remainder of the game.
UTD topped the 90-point mark for the fifth time this season and amassed a margin of victory of 25 points or greater for the sixth time this year.
With the win, and a loss by second-place East Texas Baptist (70-68 at LeTourneau), the Comets snagged at least a share of the ASC East Division title. UTD will host the ASC Tournament, February 25-27, as the Comets swept ETBU earlier this season.
The Comets continue their four-game home stand to close out the regular season Monday night when they host Mississippi College in a game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 10. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. with a win over Choctaws giving UTD the outright crown of the ASC East.
