BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille men's basketball team kept the momentum from their impressive season opening win, by proving to be too much to handle for Roberts Wesleyan as the Mavs won (72-61) in the opener of the Knee Center of WNY Tip-Off Tournament.
The Mavs continued to play tremendous team basketball as they moved the ball with precision, which led to (21) assists on their (28) made field goals in the game. Leading the way in that regard was Angel Flores who dished out a game high six assists. He also chipped in with (11) points and (6) boards on the night.
Fellow senior Phil Maiarana led the Mavs with (16) points on (6 of 9) shooting from the floor while grabbing (4) rebounds and finishing with (4) assists as well. Coming off the bench to make an impact was Sean Bellomo who knocked down (6 of 12) shots from the floor including a driving dunk off a nice feed from Steve Bryant with (1:38) remaining in the first half, which got the partisan Medaille crowd buzzing. That dunk stretched the Mavs lead to (13) points. Bellomo also grabbed six rebounds in the game.
The Medaille bench proved to be a big difference as they outscored the Raiders reserves (25-10) en route to the victory.
The win keeps Medaille unbeaten at (2-0) but they will have their hands full tomorrow when they face Nazareth College in the Knee Center of WNY Tip-Off Tournament Championship game at 3:00pm. The Golden Flyers cruised past Morrisville State in the night's other game (86-62). The consolation game will tip-off at 1:00pm as Morrisville faces Roberts Wesleyan.
