WESTVILLE, Ind. - It was another impressive win for the Trine University men's basketball team as they took care of business on the road at Purdue North Central 68-56. The Thunder are now 5-2 on the season.
Both sides shot lights-out in the first half, but it was a 10-0 run by the Thunder to open the game that made the difference. Trine hit 13-of-22 (59%) from the floor in the first 20 minutes as they built a 16-1 lead over the first seven minutes. The Panthers also shot 50 percent from the floor (12-for-24) in the first half to pull within five at the break. Senior Tim Pearcy (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) hit 7-of-8 in the half to score 12 of his 19 total points.
Similar to the first half, the Thunder came out of the locker room firing as they opened up a 23 point lead in less than 10 minutes as they out-scored Purdue N.C. 23-10. The Panthers would go on an offensive run of their own as they out-scored the Thunder 20-2 to pull within five points with just three minutes to go in the game. Trine was able to convert on 10-of-14 from the free throw line down the stretch as the Panthers managed just three points in the final minutes.
Junior Scott Rogers (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) led the Thunder with a season and game-high 25 points while also pulling down six rebounds and a game-high four steals. Rogers was near perfect from the free throw line hitting 11-of-12. Pearcy finished on 9-of-12 shooting while grabbing a team-high seven boards. Junior Ian Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) added in 12 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line. Sophomore Chris Kent (Angola, Ind./Angola) led the Trine offense with five assists.
Both sides had nearly identical numbers on the night as the Thunder hit 22-of-45 (48.9%) from the floor while Purdue N.C. hit 21-of-48 (43.8%). The Panthers made the only three of the night as they hit just 1-of-11 from behind the arc compared to 0-for-2 for Trine. The different for Trine came from the charity stripe as they made 24-of-35 (68.6%) while the Panthers were just 13-for-19 (68.4%). Purdue N.C. out-rebounded the Thunder 30-to-26 but struggled to control the ball as they had committed 22 turnovers compared to just 13 for Trine.
Trine will take nearly two weeks off before returning to action on December 17 when they travel to Heidelberg University for a 2:00 p.m. game.
