BEREA, OHIO – All-OAC sophomore forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick)  scored 21 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team falls to Wilmington College , 77-70 in overtime, today (Saturday, January 28, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. This was the second and final regular season meeting between the teams.

Media and fans can watch the replay of this game on SportsTime Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9:00 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29 at 5:00 a.m. and Monday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 a.m.

With its victory, Wilmington improved its record to 10-8 overall and 8-4 in the OAC.  With its loss, B-W dropped to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Bowman for Wilmington, junior guard Brandon Candella had 13 points, sophomore forward  Malcolm Heard II had 12 and freshman guard RJ Leppert had 10.  B-W was led by Payne's game-high 21 points. In addition, junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high-tying 10 rebounds. He tied for rebound honors with sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) who also had 10 caroms..

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 19:23 mark when sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) made a jump shot. The lead grew to six via a 10-6 run with Umbel canning a three-pointer at 14:25 for a 12-6 advantage.

After  B-W  pushed its lead to eight points on two separate occasions, the Quakers went on a 7-0 run to close to 22-21 when Bowman made a jumper at 7:25. Payne ended the run with a foul shot at 7:25 and a Krakowiak jumper at 6:35 make it 25-21.
 
Bowman continued the Quaker run with a foul shot at 5:53, a steal and jumper at 5:22 and a layup via a steal and fastbreak gave Wilmington a 26-25 lead with 4:56 left.  Following four lead changes, Wilmington got a hoop from sophomore forward Ben Vonderhaar with 1.5 seconds left and built a 30-27 halftime lead.

In the second half, Bowman stretched the lead to six with a three-pointer at 19:20 and Leppert made it eight at 37-29 with 18:52 left.  Umbel ended the Quaker run with a layup at 18:19 and Krakowiak made a short jumper at 18:02 to cut the deficit to 37-33, but an 8-2 run pushed the lead to double digits at 45-35 when sophomore guard Klarke Ransome made a layup off a Yellow Jacket turnover at 14:58.

Umbel again ended the run by grabbing a rebound and going coast-to-coast for a layup at 14:11 to make it 45-37, but a pair of Quaker layups pushed the lead to 12.

Undaunted, back came the Yellow Jackets with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 51-49 when Payne canned a long trey just before the shot clock expired at 8:58. After the teams exchanged hoops, Candella scored to give the Quakers a 55-51 lead.
 
Umbel came back to make it a 2-point game with a pair of foul shots at 6:38 and Leppert countered with two of his own at 6:27 to make it 57-53.  Ferrell made one of two foul shots at 6:19 to make it 57-54, but again Wilmington countered with a Vonderhaar layup at 5:20 for 59-54 advantage. A Leppert layup then extended the lead to 61-54.
After the teams again exchanged hoops, Payne nailed a long three-pointer at 2:46 top make it 63-59 and then two  foul shots at 2:07 to make it a 2-point contest.
 
After a Heard layup at 1:35 gave Wilmington a 65-61 lead, B-W received a layup by All-OAC point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) at 1:07 and a driving layup by Umbel with 37.7 seconds left to tie it at 65-65.
 
Wilmington ran the clock down to 10.8 seconds left before calling timeout. Out of the timeout, Bowman got the ball and missed a three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
 
Wilmington scored first in the extra session when Heard made a short jumper at 4:39 for a 67-65 lead.  Payne gave the lead back to B-W with a layup (goaltending) and a foul shot for a three-point play at 3:39 and a 68-67 advantage, but Heard gave the lead back to the Quakers with a dunk at 3:06. Leppert, a 90% foul shooter, had a chance to extend the lead at 2:39, but missed two charity tosses.
 
Candella stuck a danger in B-W's heart with a three-pointer at 1:25 for a 72-68 lead and a subsequent turnover hurt even more. Candella then made it a five-point lead with a foul shot at 51.3 seconds left. Krakowiak brought B-W to 73-70 with a jumper at 41.8.
 
Bowman made two foul shots at 32.2 to make it 75-70 and Leppert ended it with two more at 15.8.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 1 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio to play Otterbein University in an OAC game in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.  The next home game is on Saturday, Feb. 4 when B-W hosts Muskingum University in the Ursprung Gym at 3:00 p.m.

Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise one more men's and women's basketball doubleheader on SportsTime Ohio. The games are on Saturday, February 18 versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.
