Payne Scores 21 as B-W Falls To Wilmington, 77-70 in overtime

BEREA, OHIO – All-OAC sophomore forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 21 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team falls to Wilmington College , 77-70 in overtime, today (Saturday, January 28, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. This was the second and final regular season meeting between the teams.

With its victory, Wilmington improved its record to 10-8 overall and 8-4 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the OAC.
In addition to Bowman for Wilmington, junior guard Brandon Candella had 13 points, sophomore forward Malcolm Heard II had 12 and freshman guard RJ Leppert had 10. B-W was led by Payne's game-high 21 points. In addition, junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high-tying 10 rebounds. He tied for rebound honors with sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) who also had 10 caroms..
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 19:23 mark when sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) made a jump shot. The lead grew to six via a 10-6 run with Umbel canning a three-pointer at 14:25 for a 12-6 advantage.
In the second half, Bowman stretched the lead to six with a three-pointer at 19:20 and Leppert made it eight at 37-29 with 18:52 left. Umbel ended the Quaker run with a layup at 18:19 and Krakowiak made a short jumper at 18:02 to cut the deficit to 37-33, but an 8-2 run pushed the lead to double digits at 45-35 when sophomore guard Klarke Ransome made a layup off a Yellow Jacket turnover at 14:58.
Umbel again ended the run by grabbing a rebound and going coast-to-coast for a layup at 14:11 to make it 45-37, but a pair of Quaker layups pushed the lead to 12.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 1 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio to play Otterbein University in an OAC game in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is on Saturday, Feb. 4 when B-W hosts Muskingum University in the Ursprung Gym at 3:00 p.m.

Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise one more men's and women's basketball doubleheader on SportsTime Ohio. The games are on Saturday, February 18 versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.
