Second Half Spurs Macalaster Past Caltech

PASADENA, CA – Macalaster broke open an evenly match game with a big run to open the second half in helping them tally a 73-61 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

Caltech jumped out to a 10-3 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Caltech held their lead until the 6:41 mark of the half when Macalaster's Pierce Peters lay-in gave the visitors a 17-16 advantage. The Scots pushed their lead to 27-20 after a Trey Muraoka lay-up with 2:52 left until halftime.

The Beavers finished the half on an 8-1 scoring spurt to tie the game heading into the locker room. The game's first 20 minutes saw three lead changes and two ties.

Macalaster started the second frame on a 17-4 scoring push in taking a 45-32 lead with 15:32 left in the contest. Caltech was able to get their deficit down to 45-36 after an Andrew Hogue jumper with 13:49 remaining. However, the Scots pushed their lead to 70-48 with 3:42 left.

Caltech made a last minute charge over the game's final moments to get within 70-61 with 46 ticks left but couldn't pull any closer.

Sam Marshall scored a game best 23 points off the bench to pace the Macalaster scoring drive.

During the game Michael Edwards moved past Ryan Elmquist for second place on the school's all-time career scoring list. Edwards scored a team high 16 points to push his career total to 1270. He needs 28 more points to break the school record of 1297 set by George Papa.
