The Centre men's basketball team rode a hot shooting performance from outside to a 77-67 victory over Oglethorpe in a Southern Athletic Association game Friday in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels shot 48.5 percent from 3-point range, connecting on 16 of 33 attempts from outside. Collin Lopez (Louisville, Ky.) led the Colonels with a career-high 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc while Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) made six of nine 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.
Donovan Whiteside (Knoxville, Tenn.) also contributed 16 points with a game-high seven rebounds for Centre. Tyler Courson led Oglethorpe with 21 points.
The game was close until the Colonels pulled away with a second half run. The lead changed hands eight times in the first half before Centre took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Lopez at the 2:49 mark.
Centre took a 34-31 lead to the break, and Lopez extended the margin when he opened the second half with another 3-pointer. Oglethorpe briefly trimmed its deficit to 40-38, only to see the Colonels go on a 15-3 run in which they held the Stormy Petrels without a field goal for four minutes.
Oglethorpe got back within six points at 55-49 with 8:44 to play, but Centre removed all doubt with a 11-0 run in which Lopez, Karsner and Matt Gump (Bellefontaine, Ohio) all made 3-pointers to go up 66-51. When Karsner answered a Will Perry layup on the next possession with another 3-pointer, the Colonels took their biggest lead at 69-51.
For the game, Centre shot 49 percent (26-of-53) to Oglethorpe's 43 percent (22-of-53). The Colonels held a 33-32 rebounding advantage.
Centre improves to 16-3 on the season and stays perfect in SAA competition at 9-0 while Oglethorpe drops to 16-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Colonels are back on the court when they host Berry at 3 p.m. Sunday.
