Basketball Secures Non-Conference Win Over Maine Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team secured a 75-59 non-conference win over the Maine Maritime Mariners at the Riesenberg Gymnasium on Friday afternoon. This was the Privateers' first win over Maine Maritime since November of 2008 when they defeated the Mariners 63-57.
Four of the five starters for the Privateers scored in double figures in the victory. Senior forward Isaiah Hayes(Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) lead all scorers with 22 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Senior guard John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists while classmate Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) recorded his seventh double-double on the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added 13 points.
Both teams were evenly matched early on trading baskets as the score was tied at 11 with just under five minutes into the game. Later on with the score tied at 19 with 8:56 remaining, Liccese scored a layup to spark a 7-0 run for Maritime that would put them up by eight. Maine Maritime made a small run to cut the lead to three as the Privateers went into the break leading 35-32.
The opening minutes of the second half were similar to the first as both teams traded baskets. Thanks to a basket from Liccese, Maritime tied the game up at 39, igniting a 17-0 run for the Privateers to go up 54-39. Hayes scored six of the 17 points during the run. Maine Maritime tried to mount a comeback but the best they could do was cut the Maritime lead to eight. Maritime would go on to win the game by a final score of 75-59.
Maritime (5-4, 2-3) will be back in action on Tuesday, January 2nd when they visit Mount St. Mary in a Skyline Conference matchup at the Kaplan Center with tip off at 7 p.m.
Maine Maritime (0-9, 0-4) will return to action tomorrow Saturday, December 30th when they visit Hunter at the Hunter Sportsplex beginning at 1:00 p.m.
