Second-ranked Washington Downs #22 Rochester to Snap UR 4-Game Streak

ROCHESTER, NY - Jack Nolan led five players in double figures with 19 points in 26 minutes off the bench as second-ranked Washington University ran past the University of Rochester, 77-62, in a men's basketball game at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
 
Nolan hit 7 of 11 from the floor, 5 of 8 outside the arc. He added three assists and one steal. Kevin Kucera scored 12 points, added six boards, eight rebounds and four steals. David Schmelter scored 11 points to go with 15 rebounds. Jake Knupp and Andrew Sanders had 10 points each.
 
Ryan Clamage scored 22 points for Rochester. He had six boards, two assists, and four steals. Brendan O'Shea scored 12 points, coming on 4 of 10 accuracy outside the arc.
 
The win was the seventh straight for Washington (15-2 overall, 6-0 UAA). Rochester had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Yellowjackets are 13-4 overall, 4-2 in the UAA.
 
On Sunday, Rochester hosts the University of Chicago at 12 pm in a pairing of the league's third- and fourth-placed teams. Emory University rallied to defeat Chicago on Sunday. The Maroons are 3-3 in the league, 7-9 overall. Emory is 15-2, 6-0 UAA. Washington plays at Emory on Sunday.
 
Nolan was the key man in Washington's spurt in the first half that put the Bears in control. Rochester used a 12-5 run of its own to nose in front, 19-18. O'Shea sank three straight free throws out of the right corner, the last one giving UR the 19-18 lead with 10:44 to play.
 
The Bears went on a 16-2 spree over the next 3:32 to build a 34-21 lead with less than seven minutes left in the half. Nolan scored 11 of the 16 points. He hit from the key to start the run, then sank two treys in a span of 36 seconds. Washington led, 43-33, at the half.
 
In the second half, Rochester made a couple of runs at Washington. Clamage scored from the key and Andrew Lundstrom connected on a right baseline hook to move UR within 49-41, four minutes into the half. Tucker Knox hit a trey to cut the lead to seven, 51-44, before Washington ran off six straight: a right post jumper by Sanders, a layup off a steal by Kucera, and two free throws from Kucera.
 
Clamage hit a followup, then Patrick Benka and O'Shea hit 3-pointers as Rochester tried again, getting it down to 59-52, with 11 minutes left. Washington's defense clamped down, holding the Yellowjackets to one layup (by Clamage) and five free throws in the next nine minutes.
 
Washington led on the backboards, 46-32, led by Schemlter's 15 and nine from Sanders. The Bears had 11 steals on 14 Rochester turnovers, leading to 24 points. WU scored 15 points on the break.
 
For Rochester, Knox had four blocks and seven points, Mangan finished with seven points.
