Media, Pa - (12/6/2021) - Gwynedd Mercy University (6-2) improved a 38-30 halftime lead into a 89-56 triumph with suffocating defense as the Griffins turned Penn State Brandywine (2-8) over 28 times in this evening's affair. The extra possessions began to take their toll in the second half, where Gwynedd Mercy University saw a dozen (12) different Griffins score in a total team effort. In all 15 different Griffins recorded a point; sophomore guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) led all scorers with 20 points. He was 7-of-13 (.538) from the field and 4-of-5 (.800) from the free throw line, while recording five rebounds and two assists. Senior guard Ty Jones (Harlem, N.Y.) joined him in double figures with 13 points in excess of his five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
A Jones three-pointer game the Griffins their first lead, 8-7, of the affair with 11:19 remaining in the first half. But over the next five minutes, Gwynedd Mercy University still trailed the Nittany Lions to a 19-19 (6:44) tie. Parker knotted the contest with one of his two three-point baskets (2-of-7, .286), after he assisted graduate guard Matt O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) on the go-ahead fastbreak bucket, 21-19 (6:25), and scored five more points on what would eventually become an 18-11 Griffin run to intermission; 38-30 (0:16). Gwynedd Mercy University continued to control the contest following the break as they doubled the Penn State Brandywine's turnover total from 14 to 28 and held the Nittany Lions to a second straight frame of 10-of-27 (.370) shooting. As a result, the Griffin lead reached as many as 40 points, 83-43 (4:54), in the final five minutes.
Gwynedd Mercy University competes next on Saturday, December 11, when they visit Cairn University for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
