UW-Whitewater Men Win on the Road Behind Gray’s Big Day

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team won its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road game Saturday afternoon with an 81-67 victory at UW-Stout.

 

Derek Gray matched his career high with 36 points with 10 rebounds and six steals to lead the Warhawks (14-9 overall, 7-5 WIAC), who knocked down 30-of-35 from the free-throw line, including 20-of-23 in the second half.

 

Gage Malensek posted 12 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Trevon Chislom tallied 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. JT Hoytink collected eight points and three assists and Jack Brahm recorded eight points, including seven in the second half.

 

UW-Whitewater forced 18 turnovers in the game on 15 steals and limited the Blue Devils (15-8, 6-6) to 42.6 percent shooting, including 39.3 percent in the second half.

 

UW-Stout jumped out to an 11-5 advantage through the first four minutes of action and maintained its lead, which grew to 11 points by the 8:21 mark of the opening half.

 

The Warhawks chipped away at the deficit and took their first lead of the game since the opening minute at 30-29 with 2:14 to play in the period. UW-W's lead grew to as many as eight points as Gray scored eight points over the final 2:38 of the half to lead the team to a 40-35 halftime advantage.

 

The Blue Devils drew to within two points early in the second half before UW-Whitewater scored the next 11 points, including a 3-pointer by Gray and baskets by Chislom and Malensek, to take a 52-39 lead with 15:14 on the clock.

 

The Warhawks never led by fewer than eight points the rest of the way and led by as many as 15 points.

 

UW-Whitewater closes the regular season Wednesday by hosting No. 2 ranked UW-Oshkosh. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
