William Paterson's Offense Shines in 108-93 Men's Basketball Win Against Hunter

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Six Pioneers recorded double-digit points as the William Paterson men's basketball team (7-5, 1-4 NJAC) erupted offensively to defeat Hunter (3-8, 0-1 CUNYAC), 108-03, and win the Centenary Tournament on Dec. 29.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • William Paterson had a four-point advantage (60-56) with 17:33 remaining in the game before a layup by senior Cody Ripato sparked a 24-9 run for the Pioneers. During that stretch, William Paterson shot 55 percent (10-of-18) from the floor with six different Pioneers contributing with points.
  • Hunter trimmed the deficit to 13 (85-72) with 8:31 on the clock, but William Paterson countered with a quick 9-2 run to make it a 20-point game before going on to secure the win.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The 108 points marked the first 100-point game by the Pioneers since the team tallied 100 on Nov. 10, 2021 against The City College of New York.
  • It was also the most points in a single game for the program since Nov. 19, 2011, when the Pioneers scored 112 in a road win at Stevens.
  • Junior Tyreek Montgomery led all scorers with 26 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
  • Junior Shawn Summers Jr. recorded his second career double-double after scoring 20 points and reeling in 10 boards.
  • The Montclair, N.J., native added five assists and three steals to his stat line.
  • Sophomore Neftali Valentin had a 17-point outing and notched five rebounds and five helpers.
  • Ripato scored a career-high 14 points and corralled four boards.
  • Senior Michael Gilmore had 13 points and tallied six rebounds.
  • Senior Adryan Lopez shot 5-of-7 (.714) from the field and finished with 12 points.

  • The Pioneers will resume conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when they head to Newark, N.J., to take on Rutgers-Newark with tipoff slated for 8:00 p.m.
