Sophomore guard Kye Robinson led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the third-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 91-62 victory at Salisbury University on Wednesday evening. The Eagles improve to 17-1 on the season.
The Eagles started sluggish from the floor, trailing the Sea Gulls by as many as seven, at 11-4, and trailed for much of the first 7:20 of the contest. After a Preston White layup and Josh Seworder three pointer, sophomore Colin Mitchell connected on a three pointer to knot the score at 12-12, and UMW wouldn't trail again in the contest.
Five straight points from Robinson and a pair of free throws from White built the Eagles a 30-20 cushion with 6:25 left in the half, and an 11-2 run to close the half gave UMW a 47-30 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to find their shooting touch, making 15-26 shots (3-6 from three-point range) as well as 11-12 free throws, scoring 44 points, while limiting Salisbury to 32 points on 36.7% shooting.
Robinson scored 28 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor and 7-10 from the free throw line, and added 10 boards and five assists. Junior Jay Randall scored 17 points on 5-7 shooting, and junior Jadon Burgess scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting.
In all, the Eagles shot 55.2% from the floor (32-58), making 8-18 three point tries and 19-23 free throws. Salisbury shot 40% (20-50), making 8-24 three point attempts and 14-20 free throws.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, as they host the University of California Santa Cruz at noon, weather permitting.
