ROCHESTER -- Shane Regan recorded the first triple-double in University of Chicago basketball history as the top-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team rolled an 88-78 road win at Rochester.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the game, burying their first three triples of the game. The Maroons would answer with a pair of threes of their own by Daniel Cochran to cut the lead to 9-7, but Rochester would hold the lead until just under 12 minutes to go when Phillip Lawrence hit back-to-back triples to take an 18-16 advantage.
The three-point barrage would continue for UChicago as Eamonn Kenah would hit three more triples in the first half, the last of which gave the Maroons their largest lead of the half at 42-32. Rochester would not go away, however, with a 14-6 run to end the half to head into the locker room with a 48-46 lead for UChicago.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets would continue their run with the first five points of the half, but the Maroons would answer with a run of their own to stretch the lead back to nine thanks to another triple from Cochran and a big and-one by Joe Berry to cap off the 12-0 run. Rochester would fight back again, but UChicago would add a fastbreak dunk by Noah Pit and a fastbreak triple by Kenah to stretch the lead back to double figures at 66-56 with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
The Maroons would continue to keep Rochester at arms length for the rest of the contest as the Yellowjackets were unable to cut the lead to two possessions until a big corner three made it 77-71 with 5:42 to go. However, UChicago wasted no time as Cochran hit a pair of free throws and Shane Regan found a cutting Berry with a full-court baseball pass to immediately raise the lead back to double figures.
The Maroons would hit their free throws down the stretch and roll to an 88-78 victory on the road.
Shane Regan finished with a triple-double with 12 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. The triple-double for Regan is the first in UChicago history, dating back to 1983-84 when assists became an official stat by the NCAA. He becomes the 15th player in NCAA Division III to record a triple-double this season, joining a pair of UAA players with Yogi Oliff (WashU) and Aedan Using (Brandeis).
Eamonn Kenah scored a team-high 16 points with four made triples. Noah Pit and Phillip Lawrence both scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, and Daniel Cochran (13) and Nick Roper (11) also finished in double figures.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 17-2 on the season and 7-1 in UAA play. UChicago returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Atlanta for another top-10 matchup with #7 Emory on Sunday afternoon.
