WESTFIELD, Mass. – Freshman guard Jen Ashton (Beverly, Mass.) notched a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Westfield State University women's basketball team to a 76-49 victory over Emerson College on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Ashton was one of four players scoring in double figures for the 2-3 Owls, who have five players, including two returning starters, sidelined with injuries.
Also scoring in double digits were freshman Molly Waitt (15), junior Courtney Kegresse (15), and junior Angela Paterson (10). In addition, senior point guard Janae Jones had eight points and six assists and freshman center Gabby Felix contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Ashton also posted a game-high four steals to complement her triple-double while playing 31 minutes.
In a superb team statistic, the Owls dished out 24 assists on their 32 field goals. Westfield only committed 11 turnovers and shot 46 percent form the field. Emerson had 19 turnovers and shot 32 percent.
"We played exceptionally well tonight," said Westfield head coach Andrea Bertini. "We did pass the ball well but the biggest thing was that we all played hard from start to finish."
The Owls never trailed, beginning with a driving layup thru traffic by Ashton in the opening minute of play. Westfield went on a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Kegresse, to take a 20-7 lead with 8:38 remaining in the first half. The Owls led at halftime, 30-15, as Ashton swiped the ball and passed to Jones for a buzzer beating layup.
Westfield continued its fine play in the second half and doubled up Emerson, 56-28, on another three-ball from Kegresse with 10:20 remaining. The Owls were 3 for 8 from beyond the arc with Kegresse shooting 3 for 5. Emerson, meanwhile, was 5 for 25 from 3-point range.
Emerson's Olivia DiNucci, a 5-10 junior guard/forward from Pittsburgh, Pa., scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Reserve forward Marissa Nobile finished with 10 points.
