Lady Choctaws Fall to Hardin-Simmons, 59-45

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College women's basketball team finished a two-game homestand with a 59-45 loss to Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Cowgirls (5-7, 3-5 ASC) made 21-24 free throws and outrebounded the Lady Choctaws (6-6, 5-4 ASC) by a count of 35-25 to help pick up the victory.

MC opened the game with the first lead when junior Caitlin Brown made a lay-up, but HSU scored six in-a-row and never trailed again.

In the second half, MC cut the lead to 51-45 with 1:23 remaining, but the Cowgirls made eight consecutive free throws to close out the game.

Junior Traci Rodgers led MC with 12 points, going 3-4 from the three-point line.  Brown scored eight points and pulled down and matched junior Valeri Stewart with a team-high four rebounds.  Sophomore Sarah Workman tied a season-high with seven assists in the game.

Angela Newcombe led the Cowgirls with 16 points and 14 rebounds, playing all 40 minutes of the game.  Kara Looten scored 15 points, while Whitney Enis came off the bench to score 12 on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.

The Lady Choctaws forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals, defensively.  Workman and Rodgers led the team with three takeaways each.

MC will hit the road this week to face Centenary College on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in Shreveport, LA.
