STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Cassie Bandow led four Pointers in double figures as the top-seeded UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team battled to a 70-60 victory over the Falcons of UW-River Falls in the semifinal round of the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament.
The visiting Falcons (21-6) jumped out to the early lead and built an eight point advantage, 15-7, at the midway point of the game's opening half.
River Falls kept the Pointers down until the 5:49 mark of the opening half when UW-Stevens Point went on a 16-2 run to take a 32-26 edge into halftime. UWSP held the Falcons without a field goal for the final 6:51 of the first half.
In the second half, the Pointers pushed their lead to as many as 14 points in the early minutes and held a 14-point edge, 47-33, with 14:20 remaining.
The Falcons began to chip away at the lead and a Maranda Dohrn layup with 6:58 remaining erased the UWSP lead and tied the game at 54-54.
The Pointers quickly answered with a Bandow three-pointer and the two teams traded baskets over the next minute until UWSP was able to open up a nine-point edge over the final minutes to secure the 10-point, 70-60 victory.
Bandow led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. She is now just three points short of 1,000 for her career. Sam Barber finished with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Ashley Averkamp and Myranda Tyler each added 10 points on the evening.
Alise Holst led the Falcons with 14 points.
UW-Stevens Point (22-4) will host third-seeded UW-Whitewater, upset winners of their semifinal game against second-seeded UW-Eau Claire. Game time Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Berg Gym.
UWSP won both meetings against the Warhawks in the regular season, defeating UWW 71-50 in Whitewater on Dec. 14 and 80-58 on Jan. 25.
