Cohen and Rando Combine for 38 as Cortland Women Hold Off Buffalo St., 72-66

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Caysea Cohen and sophomore Brittany Rando each registered career scoring highs as Cortland snapped a five-game losing streak with a 72-66 victory over visiting Buffalo State. The Red Dragons are now 2-3 in the SUNYAC and 4-7 overall.

Cohen scored 20 points and also finished with career bests of four assists and four steals. She made 9-of-11 free throws. Rando recorded 18 points, including 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range.

Sophomore Megan Touhey added 12 points and seven rebounds, junior Grace Williamson totaled seven points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots and sophomore Lindsey Minor tallied seven points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Olivia Luciani made 5-of-11 three-pointers and led Buffalo State (5-7, 1-4 SUNYAC) with 15 points. Hillary Kollar connected on 4-of-6 treys in a 12-point, four-assist effort. Bianca Smiley added 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals and Ashley Wallace chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Cortland scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 36-24 lead and pushed the margin to 19 at 48-29 on two Sarah Shine free throws with 15 minutes remaining. Trailing 49-33, Buffalo State mounted an 11-0 run over less than three minutes, including two Luciani three-pointers and a Mariah Norris three-point play, and was within 49-44 with 10:26 left.

Four points from Touhey, a Williamson layup and a Rando three-pointer gave Cortland a 14-point lead with 7:37 left. The Bengals, however, fought back and eventually were back within five at 62-57 on Smiley's three-point play with 3:47 left.

Cohey hit a layup at the 3:02 mark, and neither team scored again until Cohen's jumper with 1:25 left put the Red Dragons ahead by nine. Buffalo State got back within five twice in the final minute, but Rando and Minor each hit two foul shots to secure the win.

Cortland shot 38 percent from the field and made 22-of-26 free throws (85 percent). Buffalo State shot only 33 percent for the game, but did make 41 percent (11-of-27) of its three-point shots. The Bengals connected only 7-of-13 free throws.

Cortland will host Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
