Women's wrap: Bowdoin falls, UWW rebounds

Freshman Alex Moore came up with the best game of her short career and Vandell Andrade had her seventh double-double in 10 outings this season as Rhode Island College knocked off No. 25 Bowdoin 72-61 in Providence, R.I. on Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin scored six unanswered points after it trailed by 11 with 74 seconds left but RIC made six of its final nine foul shots to help put the game away. Moore's 22 points led the way for RIC.

No. 8 UW-Whitewater bounced back after two losses at the D3hoops.com Classic, defeating UW-River Falls 73-62 in its return to conference play. Kaitlyn Thill led the Warhawks with 19 points.

Baruch saw its 22-game home winning streak snapped, as the Bearcats fell to Staten Island 79-64. Once a perennial NCAA Tournament entrant, the Dolphins hadn't beaten their conference rival since Feb. 25, 2004.

Meredith Mesaris led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds as Scranton defeated William Paterson 81-60 at Western Connecticut's tournament. The win puts coach Mike Strong at 797 for his career, keeping him in line to get No. 800 as soon as Jan. 11 at home vs. Juniata. The Lady Royals are 8-2.

Savannah Morgan and Hannah Lilly combined for 40 points and No. 13 Emory set a school record for consecutive victories with a win against Johns Hopkins. The Eagles upped their mark to 11-0 following a 72-67 decision over the Blue Jays, who slipped to 8-3. No. 19 York (Pa.) won its 11th consecutive game to open the season as well, defeating Mary Washington for the first time in the last 11 tries in beating the Eagles 53-35. Kelsey Murphy led the Spartans with 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting.

No. 4 Whitman remained unbeaten, led by Sarah Anderegg's double-double in a 78-58 win at Pacific. Anderegg went for 19 and 12, while Heather Johns added 16 points. The top two teams rolled as well, as No. 1 DePauw cruised past Hiram 87-52 and second-ranked Wash U. rolled over Webster 80-47.

Nicole Francomano registered a triple double with 14 points, 11 assists and 11 steals, while adding six rebounds to help lead Brooklyn past Lehman 96-88. 

Cathy Parson returned to Christopher Newport as a Division III head coach for the first time since she left the program following the 1997-98 season, and the Captains did not roll out the red carpet for her new team as they rolled over Frostburg State 82-44.

Wheaton (Mass.) improved to 11-0 with a 71-63 win at Coast Guard. On the opposite end, Mount St. Mary lost at St. Joseph's (Bklyn.) to fall to 0-9. The Knights, who had 24 consecutive winning seasons under Randy Ognibene, have not won since he was ousted shortly before the season started.
