March 21, 2026Christopher Newport University's NCAA Tournament journey came to a close Saturday night, as the Captains suffered a 72-58 loss to Emory University in a National Semifinal game at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. John Krikorian's squad ends the year with a 25-6 record, and advanced to the Final Four for the fourth time in program history, all since 2016. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way for the Captains with 16 points, and was joined in double figures by fellow juniors Tyson Henderson (11) and Ethan Ward (10). -

Christopher Newport Advances to Elite Eight Following 59-57 Road Victory over Randolph-Macon College
March 13, 2026Christopher Newport University surged to a 14-point halftime lead Friday night, and then held off the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College, 59-57, at a jam-packed Crenshaw Gymnasium. The victory in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament improved the Captains record to 24-5 and John Krikorian's team will now advance to the Elite Eight of the 64-team tourney. CNU will play the third-ranked Celts of the University of St. Thomas (Texas) on Thursday in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Captains, ranked 15th in the country, were led by junior big man Ethan Ward, who scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior Toa Hollenbeck (13) and senior Collin Hines (12) also reached double figures in scoring as the Captains ended the Yellow Jackets season with a 27-4 record and handed R-MC its first home loss of the season after 15 consecutive victories. -

Captains Advance to Sweet 16 With 90-61 Home NCAA Victory over Washington & Jefferson
March 07, 2026Christopher Newport University never trailed Saturday night as the 15th-ranked Captains Sailed into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament with a 90-61 home victory over Washington & Jefferson College. The Captains improved to 23-5 with the victory at the Freeman Center that propels the Captains into the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in program history, and the sixth time in the last seven tournaments. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the Captains with an 18-point scoring effort, while senior Collin Hines registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Ethan Ward also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points, as the Captains held W&J to 36 percent shooting for the night. -
Four Captains Score in Double Figures as 15th-Ranked Christopher Newport Advances in NCAA Play over Stevens
March 06, 2026Christopher Newport University broke open a close game in the second half Friday night, and held off Stevens Institute of Technology, 75-62, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament at the Freeman Center. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way by scoring 21 points as the Captains improved to 22-5 on the season. The Captains will play the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College Saturday in the second round of the tournament. Tip off time is set for 5:45 p.m. at the Freeman Center. Christopher Newport Advances to C2C Title Game Thanks to Comeback and OT Victory
February 27, 2026Christopher Newport University scored the final five points of regulation Friday night to force overtime, and then held off UC Santa Cruz at West Field House, 77-74, in the semifinals of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Captains, ranked tenth in the nation, improved to 21-4 and will play the University of Mary Washington Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at KP Arena for the title. Mary Washington, ranked seventh in the country, ousted Salisbury in the first semifinal on Friday, 55-46, to improve to 23-3 on the season. Christopher Newport trailed for most of the game Friday, and was looking at a five-point deficit, 64-59, with just 1:23 remaining in the second half. The Captains rallied as junior Toa Hollenbeck scored the final seven CNU points of regulation to pull the Captains into a 66-66 tie after 40 minutes. Hollenbeck evened the game on a driving layup while drawing a foul with 11 seconds remaining, and his free throw to complete the three-point play forced extra time. Hollenbeck and junior Zyir Baskerville then each added five more points in the OT as the Captains out-scored the Slugs, 11-8, in the extra period to advance to the title game. -
Tenth-Ranked Christopher Newport Closes Regular Season with 79-47 Home Win over Salisbury
February 21, 2026Senior Collin Hines enjoyed Senior Night Saturday at the Freeman Center, leading the tenth-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University to a 79-47 victory over Salisbury University. Hines registered a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, and junior Ethan Ward scored 18 points, to lead CNU to its 20th victory of the season. The Captains never trailed in the game, and used a 29-7 first half run to open a 40-15 lead at halftime. CNU then out-scored the Sea Gulls in the second half, 39-32, to coast to the 32-point triumph. John Krikorian's squad is now 20-4, marking the 11th straight season the Captains have reached the 20-win plateau. -
Eighth-Ranked Christopher Newport Falls at 11th-Ranked Mary Washington, 88-77
February 14, 2026Christopher Newport University battled from behind most of the night Saturday before the eighth-ranked Captains dropped an 88-77 decision at 11th-ranked Mary Washington. The road loss snapped an 11-game CNU winning streak, as John Krikorian's squad fell to 19-4 on the season. Mary Washington, now 19-3, used a 22-8 run in the opening half to open a 13-point lead at halftime, 40-27. Christopher Newport cut the lead as close as eight in the second half, but could get no closer. The Captains out-scored the Eagles in the second stanza, 50-48, and freshman Cam Quarles scored 12 of his career-high 15 points after halftime to lead the comeback effort. -
Eighth-Ranked Christopher Newport Sails to 77-49 Victory at Salisbury
February 11, 2026Christopher Newport University never trailed Wednesday night, cruising to a 77-49 victory at Salisbury University. The Captains, ranked eighth in the nation, improved to 19-3 and have now won 11 straight games, as well as 18 of the last 19. John Krikorian's squad was led by junior Toa Hollenbeck and senior Collin Hines, who each scored 14 points. Junior Tyson Henderson also reached double digits with 12, and juniors Isaiah Dozier and Zyir Baskerville each added nine as CNU held the Sea Gulls to 32 percent shooting at the Maggs Center. The Captains used a 30-8 first half run over the final 14 minutes to increase a three-point lead, 11-8, to a 25-point advantage at halftime, 41-16. The first half surge included a 15-0 run, and CNU added to the lead in the second stanza...going ahead by as many as 32 en route to the 28-point triumph. -

Toa Hollenbeck Scores 43 to Lead 12th-Ranked Christopher Newport over 2nd-Ranked Mary Washington
February 04, 2026Junior Toa Hollenbeck set a new Freeman Center scoring record Wednesday night, pouring in 43 points to lead Christopher Newport University to an 86-77 victory over the University of Mary Washington. The victory was the tenth straight for the Captains, who improved to 18-3 on the season. Hollenbeck, from Chesapeake, Va., posted 17 points in the opening half and then erupted for 26 in the second stanza as the 12th-ranked Captains held off the second-ranked Eagles, who had a nine-game winning streak snapped. Hollenbeck made 12-of-22 shots, including six-of-nine from long range, and was perfect at the foul line, converting all 13 attempts. It marked the largest scoring output by a CNU player since December of 2010, when Conley Taylor logged 44 points at Frostburg State. In addition to his 43-point performance, Hollenbeck also pulled down eight rebounds as the Captains improved to 11-1 this season at the Freeman Center. -
14th-Ranked Christopher Newport Holds Off UC Santa Cruz, 71-64, for Ninth Straight Victory
January 29, 2026Christopher Newport University opened a 17-point second half lead Thursday night over UC Santa Cruz, but then had to hold off the Banana Slugs down the stretch to record a 71-64 victory at the Freeman Center. The win in the battle of Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference members was the ninth straight for the Captains, and the 16th in the last 17 games for John Krikorian's squad. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way for CNU, scoring 21 points, with 18 coming in the second half. Junior Zyir Baskerville (13), senior Collin Hines (12), and junior Tyson Henderson (10) also reached double digits in the scoring column for the Captains, who improved to 17-3 on the season. -
Toa Hollenbeck Scores Career-High 32 Points to Lead CNU to Eighth Straight Victory
January 18, 2026Junior Toa Hollenbeck registered a new career high Sunday, scoring 32 points while leading Christopher Newport University to a 93-88 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The victory was the eighth straight for the 17th-ranked Captains, and the 15th in their last 16 games. John Krikorian's squad is now 16-3 on the season. Hollenbeck, who went over the 1,000-point mark for his career earlier this month, scored 21 of his 32 in the opening half as CNU opened a 46-34 lead at the intermission. The Chesapeake, Va., native knocked down all five of his three-point attempts in the first half and finished the game six-of-seven from long range. Hollenbeck passed his previous high of 30 points scored vs. John Jay in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last March. Senior Collin Hines scored 15 points, and juniors Zyir Baskerville and Tyson Henderson also reached double figures for Christopher Newport with 13 points each. -
17th-Ranked Captains Win Seventh Straight With 61-59 Triumph over ETBU
January 17, 2026Christopher Newport University upped its record to 15-3 Saturday with a 61-59 home victory over East Texas Baptist University at the Freeman Center. The 17th-ranked Captains have now won 14 of their last 15 games, and have won seven straight games for the second time this season. Junior Zyir Baskerville came off the bench to lead the Captains in scoring with 16 points. He was joined in double figures by senior Collin Hines, who scored ten. -
20th-Ranked Christopher Newport Holds Off 24th-Ranked Johns Hopkins, 68-65
January 07, 2026The lead exchanged hands 20 times Wednesday night as Christopher Newport University and Johns Hopkins University staged an epic Top 25 showdown at the Freeman Center. When the dust settled, the Captains, ranked 20th in the nation, held off the 24th-ranked Blue Jays, 68-65, improving to 14-3 on the season. The triumph was the sixth straight for John Krikorian's squad, and the 13th in the last 14 games for CNU. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way for Christopher Newport, scoring 18 points with 11 coming in the second half. Senior Collin Hines and junior Ryan Derderian each logged ten points as the Captains upped their home record this season to 7-1. -
Christopher Newport Wins Fifth Straight Game as Defense Leads Captains over Stockton, 77-57
January 03, 2026Christopher Newport University used an outstanding second half defensive effort to cruise past Stockton University, 77-57, Saturday afternoon in the Stockton Classic. The victory was the fifth straight for the Captains and 12th in the last 13 games, as John Krikorian's squad improved to 13-3 on the season. The Ospreys fell to 6-6 with their first home loss at the Sports Center on the Stockton campus in five games this season. CNU held Stockton to just 23 points in the second half, and the Ospreys were able to make just seven-of-29 shots after halftime and just one three-pointer in 12 attempts. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the Christopher Newport offensive effort, scoring 25 points while converting all ten of his free throw attempts.Junior big man Ethan Ward also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points, making all four of his shots from the field and all four from the line. -
Toa Hollenbeck Records 1,000th Career Point as Christopher Newport Defeats Rowan, 64-58
January 02, 2026Christopher Newport University opened 2026 by holding off the Profs of Rowan University, 64-58, Friday at the Stockton University Classic. Junior Toa Hollenebck led the way for CNU with 19 points, surpassing the 1,000-point mark for his career and becoming the 35th player in CNU history to reach the plateau. Junior Tyson Henderson scored 15 points and freshman Tyler Sprague also reached double digits wih ten points as the Captains improved to 12-3, while the Profs fell to 2-9 on the year. -
Christopher Newport Holds Off RIT, 68-59, For 10th Win in Last 11 Games
December 30, 2025Christopher Newport University held off the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tuesday night to improve to 11-3 on the season. The Captains had four players score in double figures in the 68-59 victory at the Freeman Center on the second day of the Captains Shootout. The triumph was the tenth in the last 11 games for CNU, as the Captains improved to 6-1 at the Freeman Center this season. RIT fell to 3-5 with the loss. Junior Collin Hines led the way for CNU, scoring 17 points, and also filled the stat sheet with nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Junior Tyson Henderson tallied 15 points one day after recording a new career high of 29 in CNU's victory over Hood College on Monday on the first day of the tourney. Junior Ethan Ward posted 12 points and junior Ryan Derderian came off the bench and registered career highs with 12 points and 16 rebounds as the Captains won the first-ever meeting of the schools. -

December 29, 2025Junior Tyson Henderson scored a career-high 29 points Monday night as Christopher Newport University defeated Hood College, 96-79, on the opening day of the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center. Junior Toa Hollenbeck added 27 points as the Captains improved to 10-3 on the year. CNU scorched the nets in the first half, knocking down 12 three-pointers on 24 attempts, and finished the game with 16 from long range. Henderson led the way, making all five of his three-point attempts, and Hollenbeck connected for four triples as the Captains upped their record at home this season to 5-1. -
Christopher Newport Recovers After Slow Start to Beat Denison, 79-73
December 20, 2025Christopher Newport University used a 23-5 run in the opening half to get the lead over Denison University, and held off the Big Red, 79-73, in the Jay Bilas Classic at Johnson & Wales University. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way with 24 points, as four Captains reached double figures in the scoring column. John Krikorian's team fell behind in the early-going, 20-8, but awakened thanks in large part to the three-point shooting of two freshmen, Tyler Sprague and Cam Quarles. Sprague scored 11 first half points, with nine coming on three triples, and Quarles scored six on two long shots to spark the CNU offense. Junior Ethan Ward posted 14 points and senior Collin Hines added ten as Christopher Newport improved to 9-3 on the season. Hines also led the Captains in rebounding with eight for the day. -
Christopher Newport Defeats 12th-Ranked Virginia Wesleyan in Double Overtime, 97-95
December 16, 2025Christopher Newport University and Virginia Wesleyan University staged an epic battle Tuesday night at the Freeman Center in the 92nd all-time meeting of the men's basketball programs. The Captains and Marlins battled for 50 minutes, with CNU emerging with a 97-95 double overtime victory. The triumph was the seventh straight for John Krikorian's squad, and the Captains are now 8-2 on the season. Virginia Wesleyan, ranked 12th in the country this week, had a six-game winning streak snapped and the Marlins are now 7-2. All five Christopher Newport starters scored in double figures, led by 26 points from junior Toa Hollenbeck, and the Captains got double-doubles from senior Collin Hines (14 points, 12 rebounds) and junior Ethan Ward (13 points, 14 rebounds). Juniors Tyson Henderson and Isaiah Dozier both contributed 18 points as the Captains held off the Marlins despite a 41-point performance from VWU graduate student Omari DeVeaux. -

December 06, 2025Christopher Newport University again blew open a close game in the second half to cruise to victory, beating Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon, 81-58. The win was the sixth straight for the Captains, who improved to 7-2 on the season. CNU's defense allowed just 19 points in the second half, and junior Toa Hollenbeck led the way in scoring with 20 points, and senior Collin Hines (11) and junior Ethan Ward (10) also reached double digits in the scoring column. -
Christopher Newport Downs Marymount, 82-70, for Fifth Straight Victory
December 03, 2025Christopher Newport University led by just two at the intermission Wednesday night, but broke open a close game in the second half to beat Marymount University, 82-70. The victory at Converse Family Fieldhouse extended CNU's winning streak to five straight games, and John Krikorian's squad is now 6-2 on the year. Junior Isaiah Dozier led the way for the Captains, scoring 17 of his game-high 19 points after halftime. Dozier also contributed eight rebounds and four assists, and was six-for-ten from the field and five-for-six at the foul line. Junior Tyson Henderson also excelled for CNU, posting a double-double by pouring in 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Henderson also posted seven assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Dozier and Henderson were joined in double figures in the scoring column by junior Toa Hollenbeck, who tallied 14 points, and junior Ethan Ward, who registered 11. The back-and-forth opening half saw the teams exchange the lead five times and the score tied at eight different junctures. After holding a 36-34 edge at the break, the Captains never trailed in the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 13 points en route to the 12-point victory. -
Christopher Newport Records Fourth Straight Victory with 80-66 Triumph over Pfeiffer
November 30, 2025Christopher Newport University concluded the month of November on Sunday with an 80-66 victory over Pfeiffer University at the Freeman Center. The Captains, now 5-2, won for the fourth straight time and dropped the Falcons of Pfeiffer to 4-5 on the season. The game came in the Holiday INNvitational, the annual two-day tournament on the CNU campus. Junior transfer Zyir Baskerville led the way for CNU, recording his first double-double as a Captain with 25 points and ten rebounds. Junior Toa Hollenbeck added 18 points, and junior Tyson Henderson also reached double digits in scoring with 11. Baskerville and Hollenbeck both came off the bench as CNU out-scored Pfeiffer in bench points, 51-7. -
Christopher Newport Recovers After Slow Start to Beat Dickinson, 79-68
November 29, 2025Christopher Newport University suffered through a turnover-filled first half Saturday night before recovering in the second half for a 79-68 victory over Dickinson College in the Holiday INNvitational at the Freeman Center. Junior Toa Hollenbeck led way with 25 points as the Captains registered their third straight victory. CNU improved to 4-2, while Dickinson dropped to 1-5 with the loss. Christopher Newport turned the ball over on its first four possessions of the game, and finished the first half with 13 miscues, trailing the entire half. The Red Devils led by as many as 13, 36-23, in the final minute of the opening stanza. Junior Ryan Derderian's bucket with 28 seconds remaining in the first half cut the lead to 11, 36-25, at the intermission. The Captains turned the game around in the second half, putting together a 19-4 run and pulling ahead for the first time on a three-point play from junior Jason Ofcarcik with 12:41 to play, 42-40. It would prove to be the only lead change of the game, as the Captains went on to out-score Dickinson in the second half, 54-32, to cruise to the 11-point triumph. -
Ninth-ranked Christopher Newport Recovers from Nine-Point Second Half Deficit to Beat Cairn, 89-82
November 22, 2025Christopher Newport University improved to 3-2 on Saturday afternoon following a come-from-behind 89-82 victory over Cairn University at the Freeman Center. Junior Isaiah Dozier recorded career highs with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Captains to their second straight win. The Highlanders of Cairn fell to 4-2 with the loss. The Captains opened a nine-point lead in the first half, 32-23, before Cairn concluded the half with a 15-7 run to cut the lead to 39-38 at the intermission. The Highlanders surged ahead in the second half and built a nine-point lead of their own, 70-61, with just 8:49 to go. "At that point, we were just trying to figure out what we were going to be able to do," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "What we had been doing wasn't working, they were getting shots and getting to the basket, so we started trapping them and thankfully that led to a few turnovers. We were able to get them off balance a bit and that got us back in the game." Christopher Newport recovered to out-score Cairn down the stretch, 28-12, to post the seven-point triumph. The game featured six ties and eight lead changes. -
Ninth-Ranked Christopher Newport Falls to 1-2 Following 84-74 Loss at Catholic
November 15, 2025Christopher Newport University fell to 1-2 on Saturday following an 84-74 men's basketball loss at the Catholic University of America. The Cardinals, 22nd ranked in the country, improved to 2-1 and had five players reach double digits in scoring. Catholic jumped to an early 8-2 lead before the Captains scratched back to get in front for the first time, 18-17, with 10:57 left in the half. The Cardinals bounced back and used a 15-5 run to open a nine-point edge, 32-23, with six minutes to go in the half. The teams went to the locker rooms at the intermission with CUA holding a 42-36 advantage.
